How to Carry out a Mob Hit
Want to make your bones to become a made man? That means you're willing to kill. Here's how to carry out an effective mob hit.
Difficulty Level: Hard
Time Required: depends
Here's How:
Know your victim. Find out as much about the person as possible. Does he travel alone? Does he like to eat out? Is he a naturally suspicious person? Most importantly, does he know there is a contract out on him?
Choose your weapon wisely. If possible, use a weapon that will allow you to be someplace else when the hit goes down. Charlie Luciano was in the can when his men whacked Joe the Boss Masseria.
Practice with your chosen weapon. If you are using a bomb, make sure that you can assemble, disassemble and reassemble it without blowing yourself up.
If you are using a gun, make sure it is untraceable. Wrap the grip with electrical tape to prevent useable fingerprints (this method is not as reliable thanks to improvements in police technology).
If you are using an ice pick, practice on a mannekin to make sure you can hit the ear while in motion. Pittsburgh Phil, who loved to use ice picks, practiced every day for hours.
If you are planning to dispose of the body by burying it, make sure you have quicklime, a body bag (trashbags are OK) and a shovel.
If dumping it in water, puncture the stomach to allow gasses to escape. The men of Murder, Inc. learned the hard way that even tying a body to a pinball machine wasn't sufficient to keep it from surfacing.
Choose the time for the hit wisely. John Gotti chose to send a message by killing Paul Castellano on a busy Midtown Manhattan street shortly before Christmas. This communicated to other wiseguys that he was not a man to be trifled with.
Choose the location wisely. Phil once nearly whacked a guy in a movie theater after following the target for days. The Profaci men who killed Joe Jelly did so while deep sea fishing.
Always have a getaway route planned in advance. Drive it several times to make sure you know it by heart and can escape in the heat of the moment. After the hit on Dutch Schultz, the driver was shaking so badly he couldn't drive.
Don't get greedy. Charlie the Bug Workman was abandoned by his cronies when he stopped to fish through Schultz's wallet.
Keep your mouth shut. Don't tell anyone what you have done. Remember, your mark probably has friends who are out for revenge.
Trust no one. It's a common mob saying that two men can keep a secret if one of them is dead. Bo Weinberg and Benny Siegel were close friends, but that didn't stop Benny from sticking a knife in Bo's chest at the request of Dutch Schultz.
