These will be the web pages of the NEW Refurbished model railway layout depicting an ex GWR branch line from Bridgwater in Somerset, through the vilages of Durleigh, Cannington, Stogursey, Nether Stowey to West Quantoxhead. The idea was to proceed through the Quantock Hills and meet up with the West Somerset Railway at Watchet, thus providing an alternative route to Minehead avoiding the "Bottleneck" at Taunton. Although this is a "might have been" model, the line was considered by the GWR just after the Great War as Government support was available to help provide employment in areas of mass unemployment. The GWR did not proceed with the plans as the costs of tunnelling through the Quantocks could not be justified. I have assumed the GWR built the line as far as the base of the Quantocks before giving up. So, like many other GWR branches, it continued to provide a lifeline in a very rural area of Somerset. |
