| WHY DO YOU GET PERIODONTITIS? Periodontitis or loosening of the teeth, is a common disease, affecting more than 10% of the world's population. The disease is an infection which destroys the structures that hold the teeth in the jaw. Periodontitis is caused by bacteria that accumulate in the space where the gum and the teeth meet. If these bacteria are not kept under control by brushing the teeth on a regular basis, they form a hard uneven surface called calculus. Bacteria residing next to the gum causes the gum -also called the gingiva to become red, swollen and bleed easily. If the bacteria is not kept in check and the inflammation is allowed to continue for some time, the fibers that attach and anchor the teeth in their bony sockets including the jaw bone will be destroyed. This means your teeth become loose and one or more may be lost. WHAT IS EMDOGAIN? EMDOGAIN is a Swedish product which, in a biological way, recreates the tooth attachment lost due to periodontitis. The important ingredient in EMDOGAIN is amelogenin, a protein that the body itself produces. This protein has an important function in the creation of teeth and their support, but is produced only during the time that our .teeth are developed. HOW DOES EMDOGAIN WORK? A natural tooth attachment consists of root cementum, tiny fiber bundles inserting into the root cementum on one side and into the jaw bone on the other side and, finally, jawbone.EMDOGAIN recreates this attachment and the jaw bone. This gives you the possibility to keep your own teeth. By applying EMDOGAIN to the root surface you make the body believe it is forming a new tooth attachment. The process of forming a natural tooth attachment and jawbone starts again, just the way it did when your tooth was originally developed. |
