24Pdr Bloomfield pattern gun at Calshot Castle Introduced 1805

This pattern smooth bore of Gun was first produced in 1787. It was brought into service by Thomas Bloomfield the Inspector of artillery at Woolwich. It was an important improvement in gun design at the time of introduction and originally was produced as a naval weapon. By the time of the Crimean war it was mostly relegated to land service and many ended their days providing flanking fire in forts. Some were still in use in 1900.
This example is on the curtain wall at Calshot Castle was made by Walker and Co, serial number 346.
It was brought here from Tilbury Fort.
