outlines of "making conversation". - introduction is written as an email inviitation to a party recieved by "He", from "Host Alec". 1 rule: pass the doorway, no one may speak a single word, except for the host. - story MUST NOT mention the name of "He" or "She". All other characters observed in the party will be named. - vital characters: + "Professor Kurtz" = respected by the other party people except "He"(opinion of "She" is unknown), seemingly cold/detached/emotionless in appearance and manners, observes other guest at the party as He observes him. + "Young Rachael" = leaves the party early, feels too repressed by the rule, eager to explode in verbal diarrhoea, secretly uses hand-written notes to converse, her actions and expressions contradict her own words. + "She" = possible ex-partner of "He", arrives late at the party, engages He provocatively in child-like physical contact(slaping, kicking, poking around), calls out He's name at the end of the party/story. + "He" = all observations are made from He's point of view, but "He" is still referred to in third-person, tries to resist provocative actions of "She", sucessful in doing that at the end(ignores her call, walks away).
- other props:
+ "Couple Paul & Linda" = just an olde boring couple, hallmark-friendly.
+ "Host Alec" = ex-student of "Prof Kurtz", talkative/annoying, maybe
make him sound like richard simones, pours drinks, plays charades in 1
room with a few of the guest.
+ "Nameless('He' absent-mindedly imagines that one of them is a 'Jackson'
or maybe "Pete") Charades Players" = makes ridiculous gestures as "Host
Alec" tries to guess WTF?!?
+ "Group Huggers Tony, Richardson & Harriet" = nod/smile/wink at each
other as they quietly frown & criticise every piece of furniture and
artifact in the host's house.
+ "Bulters & 1 Scantily-Clad Maid"= supporting 'talkies' for Alec,
minimum use.
- Order of Appearance/Observations: He, Allec(@ the door), Bulters & Scantily-Clad Maid(minor props, throw 'em in when a few xtra witty lines would help), Rachael, Nameless Charades Players(& Alec again), Group Huggers, Couple, Kurtz, She.=== From: "Aby Psy Tool" <[email protected]> Subject: Invitation to post-grad party Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2005 10:40:35 -0800 Hello, fellow associate and sometimes friend! Alec here. I know it has been a long time since I last contacted you. Hope you have not forgotten me yet. I have been awfully busy, working on my final project for my degree in psychology. Sorry I did not invite you to my graduation ceremony. You know... limited seats, and my parents would be rather pissed if I invited friends instead of the relatives. I will be hosting a post-graduation party at my family's holiday chalet. Free flow of beer and blueberry cake. You will love it. Dress code is "smart causal", but I guess you will wear whatever the hell you want, no matter what I tell you. Haha. Attached is a map of the area and some directions, just in case you get lost or something. Don't be late! ONE LAST THING: Call me obnoxious, but I came up with a fun little theme for the party, "Body Language & Good Vibrations". Yeah, it sounds like porn. Basically, NO TALKING through out the whole party, until you step out the door. We say "Hi/Hello/Bla Bla Bla" at the door, and shut the !@#$ up. The only people allowed to speak would be me, and the guys(convinced them to dress up as butlers, btw) helping me to organise. Will be really hard to know what drinks people want if all of us cannot talk. Title: Making Conversation He arrived at the house, which faced the seaside, amid palm trees and regularly trimmed bushes. He wondered why he never realised that he had such sickeningly rich friends. A press of the bell, and a vaguely familiar face greets him, dimpled and fair with red wavy hair. "Hello hello. You're late!", Alec chuckled. He looked pass Alec's shoulder, noticing that the living room was already crowded with people, and gave Alec a confused stare. Perhaps Alec had told everyone else that party will start earlier, and somehow forgotten about him. Perhaps Alec purposely left him out of the loop, a lame revenge for the times he had played esoteric jokes on Alec. He wanted to mumble some swear words, but decided against it. He put one foot pass the boundary of the walls, nod at Alec, and played along with the dumb rule. Alec briefly introduced him to everyone, including his 'butlers' and one maid. Checking out the scanty outfit of the maid, he could not figure out if the maid was one of Alec's more gullible associates, or a hired stripper.[STOP. CON'T] Other than that, their banal pleasantries thankfully did nothing to him, no mark on his short-term memory, nothing close to being endearing, as a quirk in speech or manners might be. He still wished Alec's butlers, and that one maid too, would just shut the hell up like everyone else. The short neutral glances and smiles exchanged, while Alec named every nodding head in introduction, made him feel at ease. The good natured(maybe cordial) feeling he got, from the other guests, would have been rare on other occasions, when misunderstood words and undertones muddle simple social grace. CHARADES PORTION: After the sunset, a few of them gathered round the fireplace with Alec in the centre. He could not remember their faces clearly, but he was pretty sure one of them was named "Jackson" or "Pete". They started making rude expressions, twisted bodily spasms, animalistic noises and strongly-worded grunts(gibberish actually) at Alec. "Charades?", he whispered to himself. "Who starred in Taxi Driver", Alec stated. No, it was Jeopardy with a circus of mimes. One of them started acting like an almost erect ape. "Category: modern history?" A nod, and someone added an air-guitar performance. "Modern rock history!" Two of them, standing on the left side of Alec, seemed to be trying to depict a setting sun -- one held out both hands, while the other framed his own face with flashing fingers as his head slowly went below the horizontal hands. The rest of them alternated between staring at their own shoes and pretending to beat up each other. "What is The Decline Of The Western Civilisation?", Alec scratched his head. He grimaced and turned away. END CHARADES PORTION; |
