"This Year's Girl"/"The Prodigal"
My Thoughts on the subject of Buffy and Angel

First of all, let me say that I love that I stay away from spoilers as much as possible. I didn't know Faith was gonna do a body switch. When she grabbed Buffy's hand, I just knew & it was a wonderful realization. I like that storyline. I think it will play out as a very good episode. However, there is no long-term risk involved. We know that there is no way Faith is going to be Buffy for like the rest of the season, because Buffy's the main character. Eliza (who plays Faith) did a great acting job, & Harry (who plays the Mayor) did a wonderful & amazing job as always. It's good to have Faith-Mayor interaction again. There's something so unique & wonderful about those two character's relationship. Joss & co have done a great job once again at making us feel for the bad guys. I found it very sad that The Mayor didn't believe he was going to make it & that his life-long dream would fail (video reference). I like how the little snake slide onto the picnic blanket The Mayor & Faith were laying on during Faith's final coma-dream. The little thing represented The Mayor himself, showing how small his transformation was. I loved all the Faith-dreams. I wonder about the dream where Faith & Buffy were making the bed & they were talking about little sister coming. What's that about? & what about 730. Little Miss Moffet Counting Down From 730. Soon we shall see what that's about. I wonder if the dream where Buffy is chasing Faith in a psychotic way with the knife is a precognitive dream about the outcome of this body switch. Was Faith running actually Buffy, & the chaser actually Faith? Does that mean Buffy, in Faith's body, will come out the winner in a final battle? Last dream question: Was the GD2 dream a connection between Buffy & Faith? I think it was. Truly, I believe Buffy is the person Faith cares the most about in all the world. & that she wanted Buffy to defeat the Mayor, however much Faith loved him. Can Faith be rehabilitated? & if so, is the council the right people for the job? I know Joss will rehabilitate her (stupid spoilers!), but I'm sure Joss will have it done in some tear-inspiring way. (Thank you, Joss, for rehabilitating my Faith). {Sorry, I take the character of Faith very personally}. OK, now in 3rd season a topic was brought up & never really addressed. Why is Giles an outcast from the council (before the firing)? Maybe we'll see why in next week's ep. Side notes, it's good to see that Willow is not pathetic anymore about Oz. Also, I loved the use of Joyce & it was cool to see her being forceful.

What is it with Angel & stalking? He stalked Buffy during the early "Buffy" episodes, & now he's stalking Kate. Why is he always following her around? Obviously it's because they are love interests, but I have to say, the writers aren't doing that good a job of making it obvious that Angel & Kate are love interests. Again, I come back to my more-Kate idea, they need to show her more, & make it obvious that Angel & her are going to get together in the future. I have to say it was nice to see Kate kicking some ass in this week's episode ("The Prodigal"). They need to show more females fighting on "Angel". The end scene with Darla & Angel was very good. It was also true to the "Buffy" episode "Becoming". All we are effects who we become. This episode brought up a very important question: where did Angel get his name??? The servant said his name was Liam when he was alive. I'm sure it'll be a good episode where we learn how Angel became known as Angelus. I have to nitpick that I hate how Angel leaves Cordelia & Wesley to clean up his messes. But I guess, when you're a super-hero it looks sort of demeaning if you have to bury your kill. More nitpicks, ever see the show "Forever Knight"? It's a show about a vampire who is good & works as a cop to fight evil in the big city. When I first heard about "Angel", I automatically thought "Forever Knight". But, never in the 1999-episodes did I think "Angel" was imitating "Forever Knight". However, lots of the 2000-aired eps have been too much like the other show. "Forever Knight" consisted of lots of flashbacks from the main character's past, when he was made, who he's killed. I bet I could find many "Forever Knight" episodes to strongly resemble "Angel"'s "Somnambulist" & "The Prodigal". Why do I bring this up? Because "Forever Knight" was an inferior show, the earlier part of "Angel" this season was much better than that. Too many flashbacks will make the show slack, so they better watch it.

OK, you've been hearing me for a while now saying that "Angel" has been lacking since Doyle died, but I think I finally pinpointed exactly why. Doyle was the connector between Angel & Cordelia. He was Angel's confident & best friend, & Cordelia's love interest. Now the character's don't have a real connection. As Joss says about "Buffy", there's a BYO subtext between all the "Buffy" characters, which means all the relationships between the characters are sort of romantic. Doyle brought that to "Angel". But, now there's no romantic bond with the characters on "Angel". "Angel" is supposed to be more family between the lead characters, but I think it's not working out too well. It leaves a void & makes the inter-cast dialogue less enjoyable than on "Buffy". "Angel" needs to strengthen it's cast bonds to be more of an ensemble. We need to see more of the other characters & focus a little less on "Angel". Part of the problem with "Angel" is that Cordelia & Wesley have no repour. They are kind of annoyed with each other in an asexual way- meaning no romantics. On "Buffy" they were love interests. What happened? Not that I'm saying they should be together, but the two need to have a little sexual tension. Back to the too-much-Angel topic, the side-characters aren't getting enough play. There is no character in history that deserves more airtime than Cordelia. She is the most hilarious character ever created. They need to put her in episodes more, like they did in the 1999-aired episodes.
