That's My Take Archive

Mid February- after airing of
"Goodbye Iowa"/"I've Got You Under My Skin"
My Thoughts on the subject of Buffy and Angel

Riley is still important to The Initiative. Riley is next. Adam was once like Riley, the army leader of The Initiative at one point. It just makes me wonder why Riley didn't recognize Adam. Shouldn't they have known each other? Another big flaw with last week's episode: Since when is there this demon code? Spike has killed lots of demons before. The design flaw with 314 has to be that he is made of the demon parts. That's why the world's are out of balance- you can't use demon-parts on a human & make it work for your cause. When you give that evil new life, it is still evil. Why did Tara disrupt that spell? Could it be the first sign that Tara isn't exactly a good witch. Maybe it is just that her mother was evil & she thinks she could be evil. The ending to "Goodbye Iowa" was beautiful. Riley has lost everything he's believed in. It must be pretty terrible to think that you are doing this great good deed & discover that your aiding in an overall evil. But The Initiative isn't evil. Pause for a second & register that. They aren't. Prof. Walsh was creating 314 to be the ultimate fighting weapon against demons. She tried to kill Buffy b/c a) Buffy was interfering with something she'd worked so hard on, b) she believed that killing Buffy would be overall good for society so that 314 could exist to fight evil, & c) b/c the way 314 was throwing the worlds of Good & Evil out of balance, I'm sure Maggie herself was affected by the evil energy Adam attracted. Of course, it is never exactly good to sacrifice a human life (I assume that she's been using Adam still alive) for your little projects, but she truly believed that Adam would be for the greater good. OK, now about NEXT WEEK. I'm too excited. Faith. You know, I did expect Faith to wake up & go have tea with Buffy. But that's just me, I have this thing about believing Faith is good underneath it all. Just a little note, Faith shouldn't be awake. In "Graduation Day pt.2" the doctors said that her brain damage was too severe for her to ever come out. She should be a vegetable. Not the same old Faith definitely. ALSO, Joss promises that the GD2 riddle "Little Miss Moffet counting down from 730" will be solved.

You know what, "Angel" needs more Kate. I just love her. I like her better than Wesley (& yes I like Wesley, too). They need to make her a cast member. & above that Jhiera person, the inter-dimensional princess, Kate is a much better love interest for Angel. "She" bored the hell out of me. It's like, yeah, I get it, the girl is cool. I like the parallel between Angel & Jhiera, both protecting the people. But it's over sexed. Just a note if any writers happen to be reading this, usually when you feel the need to throw in a lot of sexual content (don't know a better word), you're lacking a strong storyline. "She" felt so targeted male audience to me. OK, about this week's "I've Got You Under My Skin". I loved it. Wow. The whole time they've got us scared of this demon who is possessing this kid & then they turn the tables. That was great. The demon afraid of the kid. One thing I really have to mention is that they so screwed up with the sound. YOU COUDLN'T HEAR THE WORDS THE BOY WAS SAYING WHEN HE TALKED IN THE DEMONY VOICE. You just couldn't. There was a conversation going on & the millions of people that don't tape "Angel" missed the whole thing. I, myself, will have to put my TV on closed captioning. Yes, the benefits of taping. OK, switch of topic. It's annoying me that Cordelia isn't a fighting partner with Angel. It just doesn't seem right to have her not follow in the fighting situations. It brings to mind the association: Something against females. Cordy's a little unwilling to get dirty, but she can handle her own. I like the bringing in of Wesley's father troubles. The key to making Wesley likable is to emphasize the things that make him weak. They brought Wesley into the Buffyverse with the intention to keep him around for a few episodes. In other words, they didn't do the things they do to make a character likable. I've never disliked Wesley, but, come on, he's got a lot to live up to. Doyle was, maybe, the most likable character to come out of the mind of Mr. Joss Whedon & Mr. David Greenwalt. The show still has a void there. When I heard the demon, or the kid, well, whatever, talk in Doyle's voice in this week's episode, saying some of Doyle's last words- it felt like home. Doyle is still "Angel" to me. "Angel" is still Doyle. I don't see that void filling in the near future.

OK, again I talk about Doyle here. "Angel" lost a lot when it axed Doyle. The show doesn't have the same charisma. Currently, I think "Buffy" is without a doubt better than "Angel". 3 months ago I wouldn't have said the same thing. What I learned from a "Buffy" magazine interview with Alexis Denisof (who plays Wesley) is that he was called like sometime near the summer about entering "Angel". Now, "Angel" had starting being conceived at least a year & a half before it premiered. I think that they planned out Doyle & always planned to kill him (they've said that), but, I think they didn't have a backup plan as to how to fill the void the character of Doyle would leave on the show. It's very apparent that those writers of the Buffyverse love to shock their audience. But, starting a show with a trio cast & killing one of the characters within the first 9 episodes was- let me go against my total, utter allegiance to Joss when I say that that was very, very stupid. It was just stupid. I know a lot of people are off this topic now, but as I see myself like "Angel" less & less & start to think it is inferior to "Buffy", whereas I didn't at all think that during the earlier part of the season, I really have to come back to the fact that they promised this show, & took away it's whole feel. It's a different show. & I don't like it more than I liked what it used to be. I just think they really messed up killing Doyle. Yeah, they sorta shocked the audience (the news leaked out early so it wasn't a shock to me), they got a good cry out of us, but what they've done more than anything is mess up their show. Now, this is not a Wesley thing. He is not a Doyle fill-in, just sort of a replacement. Doyle wasn't killed to make room for Wesley & they could have easily brought in Wesley & kept on Doyle. In fact, I think the contrast between the characters &, also the possibility of a little love triangle with Doyle, Wesley, & Cordelia, would have made for good stuff. You know, I liked Kate a lot. & it's not just because she reminds me of myself. There's something about her character. She's so much of a parallel to Angel, Mr. Emotionally Controlled. I really think it would help fill the void to bring her in every episode.
