That's My Take Archive Early December, 1999- After airing of "Hero"

OK, now, this is my official take on Doyle's departure. The main reason Doyle is no longer with us is because the producers simply love to shock their audience. Greenwalt & Joss (The executive producers) have been itching to kill off a main character for a very long time (& I'm talking since "Buffy" began.) But, see, they didn't want to get too attached to writing the character in which they were going to ax. So, what they did was conceive a character in which they knew from the start that they would kill. But, when the rumors hit heavily about Doyle dying, & Glenn Quinn leaving the show, all was lost. Their big shocking event was ruined. What I'm saying is, the whole purpose behind killing Doyle was lost when people found out about Glenn leaving. So now, the only redeemable quality of Doyle's death is with the transferance of his power (which you will see on December 14th.) But, the true purpose- to shock- has failed. I really think that if they knew that their big surprise was going to be no surprise to anybody with a computer, they wouldn't have killed Doyle. I also have to say that ending the Cordelia/Doyle romance was such a mistake. Ending the Buffy/Angel romance so that the two characters can head their own shows was brilliant. That intense of a romance cannot be sated, because it's boring when it is. It gets old fast, & breaking a part those two characters with so much storyline possibility individually was such a brilliant career move for everyone involved. But, the fans need something to take place of this romance to complete the parent show- "Buffy" & the spinoff- "Angel"."Buffy"'s got it's romances. But "Angel" doesn't. I'm not asking for Angel to have a romance, because on many levels I feel that Angel with anyone but Buffy is taking Angel out of character. But, Cordelia finding romance with Doyle was just what the show needed. I don't see that magic happening with Wesley. This is no offense to the actor, Alexis Denisof, but Wesley is not a loved character. I can't see him filling Doyle's shoes on the show. I can't see him being Angel's confidant. A romance with Cordelia & Wesley doesn't have the same sparkage as with Cordelia & Doyle. I think the producers might have really messed up by eliminating the Cordy & Doyle romance, when they've got nothing else to provide for the romantic line. It was also very unfair to promise this trio of a cast & take away one of the members. It's not like this is season 2 or 3- this is season 1. They started this show & promised the fans a lie. Now, don't get me wrong. I have utter faith in Joss Whedon & David Greenwalt. But I think they made a mistake. Several, actually. If they wanted to kill of a main character, they should have waited until more time had passed & they had introduced some other characters (they took away a lifeline when they took away one of the three stars of the show). I also think that they should have put a little more thought into the plot of killing Doyle. I was not effected by anything more than that Doyle was gone. The episode failed to get that across in a way that would make you sadder to see him go. It will take a while for the fans to adjust to an "Angel" without Doyle. There was a certain vibe between Doyle, Angel, & Cordelia- a certain chemistry. I can't even imagine that kind of chemistry happening with Wesley, & Angel & Cordelia. Or with just Angel & Cordelia. This has been a super long rant so I'm going to rap it up with a last thought. Watching "Sense & Sensitivity" that mostly focused on Kate, I was bored. Because there wasn't enough Angel, Cordelia, & Doyle. I like Kate. & I like Wesley. But an "Angel" episode without the original trio cast, isn't an "Angel" episode at all to me.Without Doyle, "Angel" won't be "Angel" to me for a very long while.
