That's My Take Archive Early April: airing of "Superstar"/"Eternity"

Buffy, "Superstar": I love the opener theme thing! I was going "yeah, baby!". I love Jonathan. I always have, since like second season when he had- maybe- one line an appearance. I thought Jonathan was gonna be OK after "Earshot". I'm sad to see he wasn't. Jonathan & Buffy do have a lot in common. Ya know what? People like Jonathan, he should be a regular. (OK, if I write Jonathan again, I'm going to start to question reality). It wasn't clear if he went to the college or not, but it looks like he does. I hope he'll be back for more than the one liners. I found myself thinking in this episode: "OK, first Buffy's Faith, now Buffy's Jonathan". Because, ya know, Buffy sort of switched identities with Jonathan. She was still the slayer, but Jonathan took the hero part of that. Is the Spike & Buffy flirting necessary in every episode? This episode was a little too much like "The Wish", only not as good. It was funny, though. & enjoyable- don't get me wrong. There was a lot of dialogue that fitted with "The Wish"- that was enjoyable. God, I love Anya. She's so hilarious. Ok, now, my last topic is on Tara. When she was attacked by that creature it seemed to me that she said it's name & then threw a spell at it to escape. However, Jonathan created that thing- it didn't have a name- so what was really happening was Tara summoning a goddess or a god to do that spell- in some language that was not English. Is it me or is she not letting on to Willow that she's that powerful a wicca? Now, there's been lots of theories about Tara. One very brilliant one that someone posted on the buffy.com posting board. They fit all the things that have occurred between Willow & Tara to theorize that Tara is Willow's grand daughter & that she has come, for some reason, back in time. It was a brilliant theory, but I don't buy it. What I think is that maybe Tara has come to steal Willow's wicca power. Remember in "Goodbye Iowa" when Tara purposely botched the spell to locate demonic energy? Maybe she's called upon demonic energy. This gets me thinking. Joss is very secretive about the shows. Yet, every writer has talked to the media about the Willow & Tara lesbian relationship. Wouldn't it be so brilliant if this is all a front? Almost like a pay-back for the Doyle slip? But, hey, maybe they actually will do the lesbian thing, but it seems very clear that Tara is up to something. & it also seems pretty clear that Willow is the target. The next question is: why? What does Tara want? I wouldn't bet on this, but I think it's Willow's wicca power. Notice, Tara came into Willow's life right after Willow was solicited by D'hoffern. Angel, "Eternity": I loved this episode. It was a genuine good episode after a long time of, in my opinion, some slack type episodes. It was a little "Bodyguard", wasn't it? That's OK, Angel is way more the hero than Kevin Costner. But that actress was sure no Whitney Houston. OK, nitpick. The Manager appeared in "City Of", & in "City Of", he was gay. In this ep, he said he loved the girl- with implied romantic context. Good to see Cordelia being the hero. I hate how Angel treats Wesley & Cordelia- "go clean this" (I guess I just have cleaning issues). I say, way to go, guys- you leave him tied up until he gives you a raise. Very good to see Wesley asserting that "true happiness" isn't sex. Making love with someone you are in love with is a totally different experience then fooling around with someone you just have a heat with. A little sex wouldn't turn Angel evil, as long as it was with the wrong girl. This episode answered an age old question of mine- it goes back to "Buffy"'s second season finale: When Willow (then possessed) gave Angel his soul back, she used the same language (I identified the same words) then when the gypsy women did it (they showed it in flashbacks), but the two curses ending on different words. I took this as a subtle way of telling the Buffy freaks that Angel's curse was changed by whoever possessed Willow (who I think to be Miss Calendar)- & that when Angel was re-cursed, he wasn't cursed at all- but given just his soul without the happiness clause. Years after this suspicion was made- this suspicion which, if it were correct, would be tragic for Angel not to know about, it was put to rest. This ep proved it false. Must a been a different language with some shared words. Like how French & Spanish have similar words for green & stuff. Wow, Angel can never even be content. It's like: "I had a good day- oh I'm evil again. Time to start killing people. La, la, la." Buffy & Angel: This week saw the return of something that was practiced during the first half of this season. When one of the shows episode was sort of slack or corny, the other's show would be good &, ya know, more high quality Buffy/Angel. Buffy was pretty cornball- still funny- but corny. Angel was kick-ass. I liked to see an Angel be better than a Buffy. I've been somewhat disappointed in Angel for a while. I sort of feel like Buffy's been so good lately, that they felt they could afford to slack on Angel for a while. OK, now, a little rant about the future of Angel. Joss has said that they are going to be doing more flashbacks next season on Angel. He says it's because those shows seem to be most popular. I'm here to say that it's not because we like flashbacks, it's because the episodes that have had flashbacks in them have been a little better than others. My favorite "Buffy" episode isn't "Becoming" because there were a bunch of Angel flashbacks. It's because the episode was this epic & perfect compilation of a season that was epic & extraordinary. I liked "The Prodigal", I like Kate, & I like Tim Minear (the writer's) work. But, the flashbacks aren't what made it good. It's not why I watched it. So, Joss if you're out there, if you can hear me, like telepathy or something- man, if you're gonna do flashbacks, make sure they have a purpose & also fit into the storyline. Next up for the new episodes? {SPOILERS}: (Joss has promised) 730, Little sister... something wicked this way come- look out LA. I can't wait! Who cares that Oz is coming back to Sunnydale, bring on more Faith!
