Hewit,Calya interrupted her reading to add a little note here:Herein lie the details about three tasks that you must complete to succeed at patience training. This has been known to be one of the most frustrating parts of training, yet I am confident you will prevail. Your best efforts are all I expect. As for time, it is not an object – take all the time you need to ensure you fulfil the requirements just as they are specified.
Now onto the tasks…
1) Work as a scullery maid (of sorts) in the kitchen of Alisin Cayar, innkeeper of The Drooly Badger in Tar Valon. You will spend one week in the kitchen washing as many dishes as the rest of the staff can manage to dump beside you. Alisin Cayar’s inn is one of the most prosperous ones in Tar Valon, so beware! This is your introduction to Endurance Training too.
2) Go to Raynard Gaidin and volunteer to supervise wayward Trainees as they endure their punishments – moving countless stones from one place to another, digging holes and filling them, that sort of mindless work, day in and day out for a week’s time. You are not to intimidate in anyway, or distract Trainees from their tasks. All you must do is ensure they see those tasks to completion.
3) Offer yourself as an apprentice carer at Master Daliya’s animal raising stall at the eastern perimeter of the city. Your initial test will last one week, and you will be responsible for feeding and caring for the animals in one of Daliya’s stalls for that amount of time. After the week-long test you may excuse yourself and return to me – and to a nice, cleansing bath.
You will be given bedding and food while under Daliya’s care. The rest of the note read:
These are the tasks you must complete.Calya folded the note carefully and put her ink and blots away, then wiped her hands on her trousers and went to deliver the note to Hewit’s quarters. It was rather late at night and he might well be asleep, but either way it didn’t matter. He’d get the note tonight or tomorrow. His Patience Training would begin with the dawn.A firm handle on your patience will serve you best in these tasks. Good luck.
OOC: I love Patience Training *S* You can do this however you want – in one big part, or three separate parts (with the latter I generally post in between from Calya’s POV).

Hewit was gratefull that the first part of his training was done. Just moving sent pain throughout his body. With stiff and throbbing muscles, Hewit trudged over to the mess hall for breakfast. New muscles were used in both arms and legs. It had taken a toll on Hewit, but he was told that the next few weeks were going to be different.
Using his left hand this time, Hewit slowly ate breakfast as even lifting up his arm to bring the food to his mouth was painfull. Hewit was glad to see that he wasn't the only one who was moving with pain. Even some of the young ones were moving like old men; older than he was. Though, some showed it more than others.
After eating, Hewit pulled out the note that he had found lying on his bed. He read the note one more time before trudging out for his first task. "The Drooly Badger," mumbled Hewit. "Where is The Drooly Badger?" muttered Hewit under his breath. Hewit had been to a couple of inns around the city of Tar Valon, but he had never seen an inn called the 'The Drooly Badger'. Hewit made a couple of inquiries as to the wear-abouts of this inn. Finally after two hours of speaking to atleast a dozen people Hewit saw it in the distance. It was in the more prosperous side of the town, but it was hidden by a couple of tall buildings. On his way over, Hewit saw many Aes Sedai and well dressed people near there. It looked like this was a place for the rich and for people who wanted to be pampered.
On his way to the back of the inn, Hewit passed by a few Aes Sedai, nobles and people with a heavy pouch in tow. There were a few servants that seemed to be going in the same direction that he was. The help always entered through the back. Hewit followed and walked through the back entrance.
The smells hit him all at once. So many things wafted at him at once that it was hard to make any of them out. There were good smells and bad ones. The smells of different types of foods, some recognizable and others he had no clue as well as spices and other sweat smelling things came from the kitchen. Hewit walked in and had to dodge out of the way of people or else pick himself off from the floor. Many people were yelling trying to keep everything in order and even to speed things up. In the distance, someone spotted Hewit and approached him. On the way, she picked up an apron and tried to speak over the noise. "You must be Hewit Strefo, Ali has told us about your coming. Here put this on, we are short today and there is plenty of stuff thats needs doing. Come with me." Relunctantly, Hewit grabbed the apron, threw it on and followed the woman. *Short handed? There are so many people here, we could barely move without bumping into someone else.* thought Hewit. After bumping into 10 people and trying to appologize, Hewit stopped, because by the time that he turned around to apologize that person was already gone off to do something else. "Here we are." said the woman as Hewit tried to avoid bumping into her for she suddenly stopped. In front of her were three sinks. Two people were working at two of them and at the third, a pile of dirty dishes was slowly getting higher. "Your job is to clean the dishes and put them over here." The woman pointed over to a wall where stacks of neatly cleaned dishes were slowly disappearing. "Make sure that there is not a spot of dirt or water is left on each dish." And with that, she left without saying another word. At first, Hewit had no clue what to do. He just stood there and watched the dishes pile up. The other dish washers started to give him dirty looks. So, Hewit looked around, found a dish towel and started the cleaning process. Time went by slowly. When Hewit cleaned some dishes, more dishes came. As one left the sink, two more were there to takes its place. It was an endless task that Hewit didn't think he would be able to do. There were times that he could have sworn he had just clean that plate, or that pot and here it was again waiting for him to clean it again. Pain started moving through his body as time wore on toward the night time. The slouching over the sink sent pains through his back, grabbing another plate started getting harder as it was painfull to grab it. His hands were all wrinkled and blisters were starting to form on his hands from the constant rubbing. Finally, the dishes started coming slower and the pots came all at once. The pots had to be cleaned out and scrubbed down of all of the oil gook and burnt parts that happened on the very bottom of the pots. Some of those pots look big enough to climb into an hide for the rest of the night. As the night wound down the kitchen began to empty. From the once bustling kitchen, there were only a small few that were already getting ready for the next day. A woman approached. It was a different one from before. "Hi, my name is Alisin Cayar, but everybody calls me Ali." She was a pretty woman even though she was robust. "I hope they didn't work you too hard today. Tomorrow will be just as hard. There is some food set aside for you. I suggest you eat it and get some rest. You are going to need to get up bright and early. Sally over there will show you to your room when you are ready. Sleep well." Ali was about to leave when Hewit spoke up, "Um Ali, I hope you don't mind me asking, but what time is it?" Ali answered with, "It is 2 candle marks after midnight." Hewit's stomach sunk in, *A half hour after midnight. I haven't eaten since breakfast!* thought Hewit. To be continued... Posted: Sun Jun 20, 2004 5:54 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reluctantly, Hewit dropped the rag that he was using and headed over to a plate with a napkin covering it. He took the napkin off and almost devoured the food instantly. With knife and fork, Hewit ate his food slowly and cherished every bite. Once done, Hewit headed over to his room which he shared with the other two dish washers and lied down in his bed. Not before long, exaustion took over and Hewit fell into a deep sleep. It was nice outside and Hewit was stalking his prey. He had only heard it, but not yet seen it. For a second, Hewit saw the rabbit he had been stalking for an hour now. He pulled his bow tight and let loose. Direct hit. It was still early in the morning, so it left him time to prepare the rabbit before traveling again. Walking, Hewit felt the ground shaking. At first it was mild and than it started getting violent. Out of no where, Hewit heard a voice, "Wake up man, wake up. It is time to prepare for breakfast." It was at that time that Hewit realized that he was just dreaming and jumped out of bed. "What time is it?" , said Hewit. "It is 2 hours before sunrise. We have to help prepare for the day." said the man. Hewit got dressed and headed back down stairs. The kitchen was already a bustle with preparations. A plate of food was placed infront of Hewit as he sat down. Without paying too uch attention to what it what it was, Hewit mechanically ate his food, as he knew that today was going to be a long and arduous one. A candle mark later, Hewit was brought to another section of the kitchen and was told to cut the ends of each greean been. To the left of him was a huge pile of green beens. As the pile lessoned, it was replaced with carrots that had to be peeled. This went on for a couple of hours. Breakfast was going to be served now, so Hewit was placed back at the sink. Once again plate after bowl after pot was placed into his sink to clean. It was a never ending process. When breakfast was done, the plates lessened, but the pots increased. Once again, Hewit was place into another section of the kitchen to some other kind of chore. This ime it was plucking the feathers off of ducks. It looked like duck was going to be served for lunch or dinner. Every day, Hewit hyad to endure the same chores from before sunup to way after sundown. It was tiring and the work did a number on hi hands and muscles. Surpisingly, scrubbing and cleaning dishes all day built up the muscles in those target areas. At first, Hewit's hands were hurting him from the constant work, but now that it was the last day, Hewit barely felt it any more. Sure his hands looked like prunes, but time would fix that. It was a tiring week and there were numerous accasions that Hewit thought about quiting. It was time. The very last day of the work week for Hewit, so he went in search of Ali. Knowing her, Ali was probably in the common room helping cleaning and checking for things that needed replacing. Once in there, Hewit spoke to Ali and thanked her. Before Hewit could leave, Ali said to Hewit the following, "Calya Gaidin has sent me many people. At first I thought you weren't going to make it kid. This was one of the busier weeks and we were short one washer. You did well, thank you." and with that, she tossed Hewit a small bag of coins. Hewit caught the bag and without looking started to oject to the money. He knew that he was here to train. He wasn't here for the money. Ali said, "Please, you deserve more, but I figure Calya might get mad with me. Lets just keep this between me and you." and with that Ali went back to her work. Hewit pondered about his past week. In a wierd kind of way he was going to miss working here. With that in mind, Hewit left The Drooly Badger and started looking for Raynard Gaidin. He had work for him. A whole week of washing tons of dishes and preparing for each meal effected Hewit in different ways. His hands were still sore and wrinkled from cleaning almost non stop for the week. A backache had started as he wasn't used to bending over in the same position for hours on end. This patience training felt more like endurance training. Rubbing the back of his neck with one hand, Hewit looked at the paper and read the next task that was to be done. It read the following: 2) Go to Raynard Gaidin and volunteer to supervise wayward Trainees as they endure their punishments – moving countless stones from one place to another, digging holes and filling them, that sort of mindless work, day in and day out for a week’s time. You are not to intimidate in anyway, or distract Trainees from their tasks. All you must do is ensure they see those tasks to completion. *This shouldn'e be too hard,* thought Hewit. So, he headed over to the Warder's Yards and looked for Raynard Gaidin. Finally, after searching for about a candle mark, Hewit saw him with a few Trainees washing clothing. Hewit approached the man and introduced himself. "Aye," said the man, "Meet me here tomorrow at dawn." "Thank you Gaidin." said Hewit. Hewit kept on thinking over and over again that this was going to be simple. I mean, how hard is it to watch a couple of Trainees moving boulders and filling holes. If he only knew what he was going up against. for the rest of the day, Hewit went through his daily exercises and prepared himself for the boring week to come. The next day was on the cold side. Snow had fallen through part of the night and the ground was frozen. Hewit met up with Raynard Gaidin. There were two Trainees with him. Raynard Gaidin walked and talked to Hewit about what the Trainees were to do. He also told him about what Hewit was to do and what not to do. Satisfied that everythin was going to bein order, Raynard Gaidin left Hewit to deal with the pranksters. As the air was cold, the ground was hard and the digging went off on a bad start. The hole took a long time to make it was already mid-day when it was finally done. Hewit just watched as the Trainees did the backbone breaking labor. So far, they were doing what had to be done as it was just the first day. Now that the hole was completed, they had to sort through the dirt and collect the stones, moving them to a designated place. Once that was done, the Trainees had to fill the hole back up. Another hole had to be dug after the first just a few feet away. As it was two candle marks after mid-day, the air had warmed up and so did the groud. The ground was not as hard, so it didn't take as long for the Trainees to dig up the second hole, but it did take them the rest of the day. At nightfall, the hole was dug and the rocks were were removed from the pile of dirt and placed in the designated place. The hole was filled up and patted down. Now it was already far into the night, but the boys couldn't leave, the pile of stones that they had made had to be moved. The pile had gotten large and some of the stones were big, never-the-less, all of them had to be moved before the trainees could leave for the night. During this whole fiasco, Hewit just stood there, waiting for the day to be over. It was boring watching these guys work, especially since he had nothing to do. Hewit dosed off twice as the night fell, but he stood his ground until the end. His belly growled numerous times. When the deed was done, Hewit left the Treainees to do what they willed. Tomorrow was another day and they were to repeat the same process over again. This continued on for the week. Everyday, the Trainees would dig a hole and refill it. During the digging, they would sift out rocks and make a pile of them. After three holes were dug and then refilled, the Tarinees had to move all of rocks from one place to another 300 feet away. AS the week wore on, the pile of rocks got bigger and bigger and it took longer to carry. Hewit couldn't help, hit or tell them how to make things go faster. He just had to watch and make sure that the Trainees did their job. Watching and waiting, waiting and watching. It was a bore and Herman had thought countless times on leaving them there to do their work. Never-the-less, Hewit sat there waiting for the week to go by. Finally, they were done and Hewit was relieved of this postition. This may be done, but Hewit had to go for his third and last assignment. I mean those were treacherous on the mind and body. Hewit wondered what the next week was going have in store for him. Looking at the note Calya Gaidin had given him, Herman read the next part. *Ok,* thought Hewit. There was nothing to prepare and he knows a bit about the care of horses, so he headed over to Master Daliya’s animal raising stall. This was going to be a cinch. Calya Gaidin had no idea that Hewit grew up around horses. For the next week, Hewit was in heaven, except when he had to shovel the horse dung, which for some reason was always left for him to do. This went on for the whole week. Without even realizing it, Hewit spent most of his time shoveling the manure. It was terrible. Lots of times, he wanted to leave and go back to his usuall plan and that was to search for his destiny. But than he was reminder of the blight and the types of creatures that dwelt there. Some of those were even outside the blight, so he was told. So, Hewit has to endure this foul job inorder to prepare himself for what might come. After the long week, Hewit was glad to go. He stunk from the manure and it was time to take a nice long bath. While walking back to his appointed room, people shied away from him while holding their nose. This caused Hewit to pick up his pace. H was probably going to have to burn his clothes because it smelled so badly. After the cleansing was done, Hewit was free to roam the yards. Not a person ran away from him due to being smelly. Hewit headed over to Calya Gaidin to tell her that he had completed what she had asked of him. Hewit Strefo Freelanders Student of Cuen'd'eren

OOC: Hey Hewit! Sorry it took me so long to see this. You can email me at patriciaf @dragonmount.com (without the space) if you want to remind me of these things, because I check email more than i do these boards. Anyway...well done! Impressive effort here :) I'll go and post the umm, ya know...new WS. Yeah ;)
IC: Calya opened the door to find Hewit, one of her students, standing before her. She let him in and he began to list the tasks he'd undertaken in the last little while for Patience Training. Calya smiled inwardly as the list got longer and longer. Hewit usually wasn't a man of very many words, but he was going through the practicalities of detailing just what his tasks had entailed now. He wasn't boasting or anything - just telling it all.
Calya had had reports from those who'd been in charge of him at various times during his training, and overall she was pleased with what they said. Hewit hadn't caused anybody's death, and that was always a bonus.
Calya gave Hewit some feedback, but there wasn't much to say. She congratulated him on completing his tasks and then explained a little of what the next part of his training would entail. "I expect you'll be relieved to be back in the field with your quarterstaff," she guessed aloud, and then when they had exchanged a few more words, dismissed him. "Rest well, and I'll see you in two days' time at our usual meeting spot. You'll hear more about what lies in store then!"
With Hewit gone, Calya decided to put on her boots and head out to find a bite to eat. She hadn't got around to it until now.
