Tarnya
01-07-2002 at 01:01 PM Healing Lessons
The bell had rung some few moments ago, waking the novices from their deep slumber, rousing them with a chorus of disapproval and a note of defiance. Grumbling to herself about the early starts that seemed to be the fashion at the moment, Tarnya dragged herself out of bed, going about her usual morning routine as she did - wash, scrubbing teeth and changing into a clean shift and novice dress. After completing the usual routine she exited her novice rooms, closing her door firmly behind her, and walked somewhat confidently down the corridor, ducking her head and adopting a more nervous stance only when sisters entered the far nether-regions of the novice quarters, an unusual occurrence in itself.
On her way to breakfast, she noticed the novice noticeboard, and a small cluster of girls crowded round it, checking chores and classes and any announcements from Shalon Sedai.
Peering over the shorter novices, she checked her chores. Not too bad, she was with Marei and Alasande on stable duty.
Then, a small notice in the corner caught her attention. Kairdra Sedai, of the Yellow Ajah, will begin a class today on the basics of Healing with the Power - please report to classroom 3 in the Yellow Ajah Halls after third has rung. All novices are welcome to attend.
Tarnya looked at it with interest. She had never studied healing - it was not something she was particularly interested in, but she had no classes today, and without this she would have to turn the spit. So, partially because of the spit, partially because she felt a sudden surge n interest, she decided to be there. Classroom 3, Yellow Halls. Not too bad, and hopefully I'll learn something useful. I shall be there!
it was after a hard day at the stables that Tarnya trudged up the stairs to her room. She had a few minutes before third and hastily washed her face and hands and changed into a cleaner, less sweaty shift and dress and brushed her hair, trying to undo the tangles forming in it. She pulled the brush through a few times and hurried from the room, down the corridors, moderating her speed to suit the sister's disapproving glares and made her way swiftly as she could to the Yellow Halls.
Finding classroom 3, she knocked and entered, curtsying to the chestnut-hair-braided Yellow sister in the room.
"Pardon, Kairdra Sedai, I am novice Tarnya, here for your Healing lesson."

OOC: I deleted the thread you accidentally started on the General board
The classroom was not particularly large, not the smallest within the Yellow Halls. Tall windows let in light, and lamps were set along the walls to augment them. It was a dull, cloudy day, so Kairdra channeled the lamps alight as she entered the room.
She set a stack of paper down on a desk near to the door, then moved to the front of the room and looked out the window for a few moments before turning her attention to the door. Those interested should start arriving shortly.
No sooner had she thought that, than the door opened and a novice entered and curtsied, introducing herself as Tarnya. Kairdra nodded to her.
"Take some paper, you will need to make notes," she said. "More novices should arrive soon, and then we shall begin. Tell me, child, have you learned any Healing already?"

Loraine stopped outside the door and breathed deeply. Healing was a skill everyone needed and the more she learned, the better off she'd be. She'd heard about the Sister giving this lesson and felt positive that she wouldn't be treated differently as she had in previous lessons. She was older and that was apparent, but Loraine didn't know the reasons behind the differences.
Taking one last breath, she stepped into the room, noting only one other Novice and a Sister standing near the front of the room. She approached cautiously, seeing the two were in conversation and quietly took a seat, hoping not to interupt them.
Hearing the Aes Sedai tell the other Novice she'd need paper, she quietly stepped up to get some before returning to her seat. Notes, she thought. She needed to take notes. She had compiled a healthy collection of them already. Being the orgainzer that she was, they were all labeled and filed in a box hidden under her bed. She was afraid she'd have orders to rewrite them if a Green Sister ever found them visible in her room.
Sighing, she sat quietly to await the other Novices the Aes Sedai had mentioned. As she sat, she made mental reminders to herself about the half dozen chores she had to finish before nightfall. It appearred to be another night she'd be crawling into bed.
Focus. I must focus. She cleared her mind of all the chores and pressures outside the room and concentrated on what she was about to learn. Healing needed strict attention, as did everything else. If she kept focusing on what was outside the door, she'd never get through this lesson.
Sitting quietly, she waited patiently for the lesson to begin.

Jenna
01-08-2002 at 08:25 PM Re: Healing Lessons
There was a knot in Jenna's stomach as she approached the noteboard announcing classes and chores. She'd passed it every day for the last, long, months, checking what chores she had to do and looking at the other Novices as they read the list of classes. Until now there hadn't been anything for her to read other than chores, but now she'd been told she was ready to take a real class. The Saldean couldn't decide if she was terrified or delighted. When she arrived at the Tower she hadn't even been able to guess what touching the Source actually meant, but neither had she been able to guess it would take so long to learn. Jenna had spent hour after hour, day after day, week after week before she, with a sweat-covered forehead and hands shaking of exhaustion, had been able to create a tiny flame of fire that resembled the one her teaching had shown her.
They had assured her she was perfectly normal, that learning to wield Saidar to time and that only really talented girls were able to do it without hours of practise and guidance. Somehow that hadn't reassure her. She was sure she had to be the worst Novice ever wearing white and that Tarnya had been right that day when Jenna had arrived and the two girls first met; it would take a lot of years before Jenna was raised Accepted.
Shaking her head, Jenna chased those thoughts out of her head. She'd been allowed to chose the first class of her own, as long as it was a basic one. The black haired Novice tried to remember which classes Tarnya had said were good as she scanned the many notes and lists on the board. Finally one caught her attention.
Kairdra Sedai, of the Yellow Ajah, will begin a class today on the basics of Healing with the Power - please report to classroom 3 in the Yellow Ajah Halls after third has rung. All novices are welcome to attend.
She'd never heard of Kairdra Sedai, but she dared wager she would like to know how to Heal. This far Jenna hadn't been able to pinpoint exactly what greater good you could do with the One Power. Lighting candles and moving things might be practical enough, but obviously you were not given this gift to have a convenient life. Healing, she thought, were one of the visible things that actually did any good.
Having decided on the class, Jenna wriggled her way out of the group of Novices crowding in front of the board, and made her way towards the kitchen. She was due to handle the ovens today, one of the worst chores, but she was positive it would be fine. She was going to fill her mind with thoughts of her first class, and the letter she was going to write her parents to tell of her progress.
As third rung, Jenna was running through the Yellow Halls, praying to the Light she wouldn't bump in to any Aes Sedai. Her hair was still wet from the bath she'd had to take after working in the kitchen, and damp spot were spreading at her dress as it hung on her shoulders. Finding the door, the Saldean stopped for a while to gather her breath - and the tangled mess of her black hair. She tied it into a lose knot before opening the door and entering the classroom.
As she curtsied for the teacher, Jenna spotted Tarnya sitting next to a Novice she didn't know, and with a grateful smile at seeing her friend, Jenna sat down next to them.

15-08-2002 at 10:00 PM Re: Healing Lessons
After the third novice arrived and introduced herself as Jenna, Kairdra obtained their undivided attention by standing and clearing her throat.
"Since it looks like nobody else wishes to come on time, we shall begin," she said. "Healing is one of the most complex and difficult everyday uses of the One Power. It is tiring for both channeler and patient, and a misstep, especially in the early stages of your education, could kill either or both of you. I therefore expect you all to pay very close attention in this class, unless you wish to visit the Mistress of Novices."
She held each novice's gaze for a few moments to make sure that had sunk in. The usual protocols for lessons would hold, she was sure, but she always found it beneficial to remind novices of such things, especially when teaching such a dangerous thing as Healing.
"Now, you will each tell me of any previous experience of Healing you have, whether you have simply observed the weaves being performed by another, or if you have Healed anyone yourself."

Loraine gave her attention eagerly to Kairdra, ready to learn everything she could, especially if it kept her away from the Green rooms and away from added chores.
"Since it looks like nobody else wishes to come on time, we shall begin," Kairdra said.
The look on the Sister's face was enough to drive home how serious the topic was, whether you'd heard the words falling from her lips or not. Loraine felt a chill run down her back, but refused to back down from the Sister's gaze. Serious business, indeed, when someone could get killed trying to help someone else!
The seriousness of the situation made her hesitant to answer when Kairdra posed her question. "Now, you will each tell me of any previous experience of Healing you have, whether you have simply observed the weaves being performed by another, or if you have Healed anyone yourself."
Loraine swallowed hard and guessed that honesty was above all the most important thing in this place. Even those things you'd never told a soul seemed to be open discussion along the halls and corridors. Timidly she held her hand in the air, vainly hoping the Sister's reaction would not gain her further punishment.
"Aes Sedai, I have tried my hand at healing. Only once," she rushed to say. "I'd seen a Green Sister heal a cut at my birthday party and thought it intriguing that I could see many of the streams she called weaving threads. When my friend fell in a quarrell with another Maiden, I...I..." She paused again and looked at the other two novices sitting next to her.
"I didn't know what I was doing, but I knew she was going to die! I remembered seeing the threads, but I didn't remember how she'd made them. I just...it...it just happened, Aes Sedai. They flew out of me and into her. Before I knew it she was breathing again and the wound on her side had healed. We never spoke of it to anyone, but she has never looked at me the same again."
The memory of a fellow maiden avoiding her and thinking her strange sliced through her bringing back all the longings she'd tried to hide since she'd arrived home and been escorted to the Tower. Months ago, now, but it seemed as if it were yesterday. She missed the Maidens and the games they played to stay in shape. She missed training through the morning and fighting with the sunset. She missed...with a start she realized everyone was still looking at her, waiting on her to continue.
"I apologize, Aes Sedai." She said quietly, choking back the longing singing in her veins. "I know it was wrong, now. I should have realized it then. I was desperate." She grew silent again and awaited the Sister's response, again hoping it wouldn't be too severe, but preparing herself, just in case.

"As you may have realised already, you were lucky your attempt at Healing went so well," Kairdra said. "That you could manage it at all without instruction suggests at least a minor Talent in Healing. I shall expect to see you doing well in this class."
She looked to the other two novices and waited.

Loraine's hand crept slowly back into the air at the silence which greeted the Aes Sedai's question.
"Excuse me, Aes Sedai," her voice cracked a bit, but she continued, praying it would firm up the more she talked. "I don't want to make trouble or even encourage it to find me, but are there no repercussions to my announcement? I have been punished for everything I thought of since I walked up the front steps, you see. I would like to know, before we go much further if there is to be any
Her voice trailed off and a small glimmer of hope replaced the bewilderment shed felt after the Aes Sedais reaction to her announcement. Could it be that not every sister in this Tower was after all the blood and sweat they could wring out of her?
OOC: Sorry, if I bumped this and ya'll had decided to let it die. Please let me know if we're keeping this thread going so I won't give myself a guilt complex over not writing for a while!!!

"Not this time, child," Kairdra said. "Spontaneous use of Healing is frequently outside the wielder's control. If after taking this class and the other lessons I know you are receiving, you still cannot control yourself, then we will see about punishment." Her tone of voice made it clear that she would not accept any further discussion on the subject.
"Does anybody else have anything they want to say?"
OOC: As far as I'm aware, we should be continuing this happily. I don't know why the others aren't posting...
