Freshman point guard Melvin Scott was arrested shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday morning morning and charged with misdemeanor assault on a female.

The alleged incident took place Thursday morning at The Players Club on East Franklin Street just before the bar closed at 2 a.m. Scott was allowed to leave on a promisory note to attend a court date yet to be determined.According to police, the incident occurred at 1:38 a.m. The police report by the Chapel Hill Police Department said the victim, who was not named, suffered minor injury and that drugs or alcohol were involved but gave no specifics. Police said a more complete arrest report would be made public on Friday. Scott, according to reports, discussed the situation Thursday with UNC basketball coach Matt Doherty, who discussed it with athletics director Dick Baddour. "The athletic director and I are aware of the situation," Doherty said in a statement released by the athletics department. "I have spoken to Melvin, and he has told me a different version of the events. "We take this seriously and will look into the matter completely. We will continue to monitor the situation as it proceeds through the proper legal channels."
