Day 1 - Manaus - Boa Vista:
Fact Sheet: 805 Km
Manaus - Presidente Figueredo - Waimiri-Atroari Indian Reserve - Equator - Boa Vista
Hotel Barrudada (Boa Vista) - twin std. aprox. USD 15
Waking up early, and hitting the BR-174 (Federal Motorway from Manaus up to the northern border of the country), headed straight for Presidente Figueredo, where we stopped for a "café regional" (regional breakfast): a common trip to visit the famous waterfalls - for us, just the first pit-stop in a long journey. Then we hit the Waimiri-Atroari Indian Reserve, and respected the signs: "do not stop", all the way to the Equator, where we had a snack "on the line". After that, there is a 100Km stretch of holes, craters, and stretches without tarmac, which only improves when we get to Rorainópolis, also known by the locals as "Quinhentos" (five hundred), as that is the approximate distance from Manaus. Here we tanked up some more, and then hit the road headed for Boa Vista. The only other distraction was the bridge over the Rio Branco, after which the jungle receded, giving way to the famous grasslands or Roraima, and amazing amounts of Buriti palmtrees. We arrived shortly before five in the afternoon, and spent the night in the Barrudada Hotel
