Highest Prison Population
In February 2000, the prison population in the USA topped 2 million prisoners.
Country With Most Murders
The country with the most murders is the USA, which in 1997 had an estimated 25,000 cases of homicide. The offence rate per 100,000 of the population for homicide was 8.2. Crime surveys say "angry young men" are to blame for the phenomenon. The US Bureau of Justice statistics report that most victims and perpetrators of murder are male, with an alarming increase in the number of teenage killers.
Air Force With Most Aircraft
The largest air force in terms of aircraft is that of the USA, which had 4,413 combat aircraft as of September 1999. This total includes 179 bombers, 1,666 fighter and attack aircraft, and 1,279 trainer aircraft. When the US Air Force entered World War I with the 1st Aero Squadron, it needed much improvement. It had already gained strength in numbers (195,000 service personnel) and equipment (740 planes) by the end of the war. At the start of World War II the US Air Force's service personnel numbered an eighth of what it had previously, although the number of planes had almost doubled. Once again events in Europe forced a significant increase in resources.
On July 26, 1947, the National Security Act established the independent US Air Force as we know it today. Its headquarters are at the Pentagon, Washington, USA, and the training academy is at Colorado Springs in Colorado, USA.
Bloodiest War
The most costly war in terms of human life was World War II, in which the total number of fatalities, including battle deaths and civilians of all countries, is estimated to have been 56.4 million. The country which suffered most in proportion to its population was Poland, with 6,028,000 deaths, equivalent to 17.2% of its population. The Soviet Union lost an estimated 26.6 million of its citizens.
Largest Anti-War Rally
On February 15, 2003, anti-war rallies took place across the globe – the largest occurring in Rome, Italy, where a crowd of 3 million gathered to protest against the USA’s threat to invade Iraq. Police figures report that millions more demonstrated in nearly 600 cities worldwide: on the same day, 1.3 million rallied in Barcelona, Spain, 1 million participated in a peace march through the streets of London, UK, and 500,00 people in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, joined the biggest marches since the Vietnam War peace protests.
Earliest Use Of A Graphite Bomb
The earliest use of a graphite bomb (G-bomb) in battle occured in 1991 when Allied forces used it to disable 85% of Iraq's power supplies during the Gulf War.
These bombs are also the first of many 'soft' bombs since they are non-lethal and seek to disadvantage the enemy by disabling power supplies. They work by exploding a cloud of thousands of ultra-fine carbon-fibre wires over electrical installations, short-circuiting the electrical systems. A later version of the G-bomb was used by NATO in May 1999 to successfully disable 70% of Serbia's power supply.
Largest Army
According to Jane's World Armies, China's People's Liberation Army had 2.2 million service personnel as of May 2000. This figure includes a reserve force and an armed police force. The Chinese military has a long tradition of self-sufficiency going back to before the Revolution. It has always raised livestock, produced medicine, and manufactured army equipment. Chinese military strategy underwent a fundamental reformation in the mid-1980s, due to the fact that the United States and the Soviet Union ceased to pose such a threat to world peace. The Chinese government is now downsizing its troops.
Just had to add this because on October 15th, 2005 were going to find by trying to install our rules of law in a middle eastern country will cause even more families with grief.
