In Todays extensions and wigs can be compared to that of the structures of the fontange, and built up styles

of the 1800s in the ways that they are worn in the idea of enhancing the wearers physical appearance.  Also,

both women in modern day and the 1800s both wore wigs, the only differences being that wigs of today are no

longer being powdered for colour or worn as a status symbol. Wigs today are still being made from human hair,

as they were in the 1800s but they are also made from fine synthetic fibers, and are shaped in any style, or

colour imaginable. See figure 14 for examples of just some of the possibilities of wig colours. Wigs of the

1800s seemed to be of limited styles, mainly all curly and made of only of natural hair sources, which left for a

limited amount of colour choices.

in times today and are not restricted to the natural colours of the 1800s
When looking at extensions, both women of today and the 1800 have worn some sort of an extension. The

only difference between the two would be, that the extensions of the 1800s were built up (see figure 4) to

sometime incredible heights, whereas the extensions of today extend downwards, in order to make the hair

longer then the natural hair length.

So in conclusion, it is certain that hairstyles have changed over the centuries, but to the extent is not as

noticed as it possibly should be. It has not nearly changed as much we all think, for there are still many elements

in which we all take from the 1800s and other eras and incorporate them into our modern hairstyles. By no

means will the massive towers of white powdered wigs return to fashion quite in the way they did in the 1800s

but it is inevitable that something from the hairstyles of this period will surface again in the future.
