That little moment before forever
And he didn’t move, or even had the slightest intention to announce his
presence out aloud.
He just watched, in a wondering silence, the moment when Roger touched her
face, gently caressing her jaw line with his thumb. And Hermione closed her
eyes, leaning her face against his touch. She had a peaceful smile on her lips,
as if time had stopped, and the world and everything else could be postponed.
They weren’t talking; words didn’t seem necessary.
He knew she wasn’t a girl anymore; he couldn’t remember the exact moment when
she, Ron and himself had lost their childhood.
But that didn’t matter anymore. The time for what could
have been had already past.
He felt a pang of jealousy when Hermione put a hand over Roger’s and opened her
eyes, smiling and gazing at him.
It wasn’t a romantic kind of jealousy, however, but more of a bittersweet
comprehension that she was leaving- leaving out his life to live her own.
It was the realization that people continued their lives; that friendships may
be forever but not the same.
And yet he smiled at the sight of Hermione wrapping her arms around Roger’s
waist; her hands traveling up and down his low back. Her eyes were shining in
an uncontestable sight of happiness and even desire. She looked happy... and
free.
“You are beautiful.” He heard Roger breaking the silence. “You are so
beautiful,” Roger repeated in a low and soft tone, his fingers lost in her brown
locks.
“Thank you.” He heard Hermione replying in a whisper.
“No, thank you,” Roger corrected her. “Thank you for allowing me to
enter your life. Thank you for giving a meaning to my being.”
“But you aren’t in my life,” she replied gently; and even with the distance, he
could see her eyes tearing. “You are already in my heart,” she finished in an
almost inaudible whisper; her eyes lowering down for the first time.
Roger put a finger under her chin, and raised it gently, allowing their eyes to
meet once again.
Maybe it was the time to say beautiful, meaningful things, to make promises,
but Roger didn’t speak a word, as if he knew that, sometimes, words didn’t seem
right. He cupped her face with his hands, and leaned forward- leaned forward to
the moment when everything was going to change.
He sighed when Roger's lips touched Hermione’s- Gently, timidly, just chastely
at first. Roger broke the kiss and looked at her, as if he were
trying to memorize every single line of her face, and she wrapped her arm
around his neck. He then slid his hands down to her waist, pulling her even
closer to him. They looked at each other, in contented silence, for a brief
moment, until he captured her lips once again.
Shaking his head slightly, he wrapped the cloak around his body and walked
away. He knew he hadn’t- or wouldn’t- lose her.
He knew he was also in her heart, just in a different part of it.
Harry Potter had finally realized that was time to live. Not only survive.
