South View High School Track and Field: Men's and Women's Conference Champions Again and Again...

2002  2003  2004  2005  2006  2007  2008 2009
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer...
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatreds.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

Grim, Holmes, Pierce and Wilson all ran their way to a bronze medal in the 3200 meter relay.

South View Looks Solid in First Outing of the Indoor Season
By David St. Hubbins, SVTF Correspondent, December 21, 2008
Southern Pines, NC - The South View Track team took an incomplete indoor squad to Pinecrest High School on Saturday, but that did not lead to an incomplete performance.  Although results were not finalized by the time of this article, it is known that the boys won and girls' team is in at least a tie for second.  Coach Autry was very pleased with the performance of his young Tiger team.  "We were a bit worried, as our distance squad was missing several key veterans for this meet.  And let's be honest, we have produced a lot of points in the distance department through the past several seasons.  But our kids really pulled it together and stepped up."  He stated afterward.  Autry was ecstatic about the performance of the freshmen and sophomore sprinters and jumpers.  "Our young sprinters showed incredible promise today.  Jerome Hasty, Devon Davis, Quinton Jeffery - all of them.  Just really gave their all.  And we cannot say enough about what Tatyana Bryant did in the jumps."  He said.

In the boys' meet, there was plenty of credit to go around.  Fine performances out of the distance and mid-distance squad with rising stars like Sean Grim, Jose Panduro, Connor Mang, Cole Spear, Dean Donovan and Ali Nunez all turning in personal bests in the 1600 and 3200 events.  "We had most of our top cross country guys off the track today, and these guys stepped it up a notch."  Autry said.  Sophomores Scotty Hinman and Jesse Autry led a young 4x800 that actually finished second behind the Tigers' state-qualifying A-squad.  Joining them on that squad were freshmen Jordan Wilson and Jeremy Ray.

Still, with all the excitement surrounding the young South View boys, the day did belong to the veterans.  Michael Moore and Aaron Holmes went 1-2 in the 55 hurdles and Johnathan Williams rolled to victory in the 500 meters.  Errik Bryant's toss in the shot put placed him second overall and verified his best ever start to a track season.  Anthony Mc Donald jumped out of the stadium at 6-6 in the high jump, guaranteeing his appearance in Chapel Hill on Valentine's Day (State Championship).  Cedric Wilson anchored the 4x800 and 4x400 A-Squads, both of whom qualified.

On the girls side, Tatyana Bryant quietly racked up over 20 points by winning the long and triple jumps and running a leg on the winning 4x400 meter relay.  Joining her in qualifying for states were Lakaisha Parker in the 500 meters, Jaira Britt in the 1000 meters and Annette Sem in the 1600 meters.  Strangely enough, they were the same four girls on that 4x400.  Taneisha Knowles, began her senior year with a qualifying throw in the shot put and also ran in the 55 and 300 meters.  Jacy Osborn tied her school record for indoor track with a high jump of 5 feet.  Junior Candace Washington also scored in the 55 hurdles.

"It was nice to get the win, but the truth is, we're just trying to get better and trying to get qualified at this point.  It will be nice when we get our full team back on the track, but right now I just want our kids to have a great Christmas and get ready to go back to work."  Autry said afterward.

South View Sweeps Conference Championship for Eighth Straight Year!!!  Moves on to Regionals...

By Paul Shugar, Fayetteville Observer, Friday, May 08, 2009
Two Rivers Conference track and field will belong to South View forever.

The Tigers boys and girls were young and unsure about winning their seventh straight Two Rivers conference championship when the outdoor season began. Conference officials even approved new rules that some opposing coaches called the “Jesse Autry Rules,” in reference to South View’s longtime coach.

South View goes for 7th straight Two Rivers track sweep

By Paul Shugar, Fayetteville Observer, Tuesday, May 05, 2009
HOPE MILLS — South View track and field coach Jesse Autry always gets a little jumpy this time of year.

His inspirational quotes — sources include French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and Olympian Billy Mills — are flowing freely. He’s looking for something, anything, to motivate his runners, jumpers and throwers going into the first day of the Two Rivers Conference championships at 4 p.m. today at Reid Ross Classical School.

The Tigers have a lot on the line this week as the boys’ and girls’ teams try for a clean sweep through the Two Rivers. Both squads have won seven straight team championships dating back to the last year of the old Mid-South.

South View Sets Sites High as the Look to Eight-Sweep and Capture a Little Piece of History: The Only School to Ever Win at Two Rivers Title, Men or Ladies...  Wow!
Xiun Chowpang, SVTF Correspondent, March 15, 2009
From The 2002 - 2008 Two Rivers Conference Champions
Hope Mills - "Freshmen are always fun to watch.  They are so excited and ready to go. They just have no idea where they are going or how they are going to get there."  Those are Coach Autry's words referring to what he admits is one of the best parts of coaching for him: starting a kid out.  "We are really enjoying the personality of this year's squad.  We have a senior class that is very focused on what the objective is and a bunch of young 'uns dying to get better.  Its very exciting."  He continued.

Autry went on a classroom to classroom recruiting binge this year looking for young talent.  The ladies team was in real need of some youthful depth, as key seniors like Taneisha Knowles, Jaira Britt, Annette Sem, Jacy Osborn and Dana Johnson will walk the across the stage and into the next part of their lives in June.  Well, the question came up: who is going to take over?  So, Autry went on his quest to find young talent.  What he found was a freshman named Darlene Giradeau whom both Coach Albertine Bryant and Coach Jahvonna Montford taut as the next great jumper at South View.  With the solid group of girl jumpers already in place, this could be something special.  Shequante Jones and Melanie Evans are a couple of freshman hurdlers who will make an important contribution this year.  Tresa Robinson, who actually appeared on the scene during the cross country season, will be a solid performer for the sprinters.  And Heather Ransom, Shannon Mc Kim and Amber Hall head a class of twelve new distance girls that already understand the importance of work and unity.  Coach Laura Valentine said "they are very motivated and more important than that, they like each other.  That always makes for good chemistry.  From experience, I can tell you that is the way Autry wants it."  Valentine ran for Autry in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

On the boys' side of things, the seniors have already set a certain tone from the indoor season: show up ready to work everyday or leave "our practice."  All Staters Cedric Wilson, Rocket Williams, Clayton Pierce and Aaron Holmes provide an excellent example everyday and this year's new athletes have a very positive attitude.  Autry is quick to point out, "We are very young and sometimes that means we are a bit immature. But when it comes to work, these guys get it."  Assistant distance coach, Josh Wyatt, who ran on Coach Autry's state championship cross country and 4x800 teams in 2003 and 2004 was the first to admit, "These guys may work harder than we did at their age.  Work is never a problem."

Another thing the Tiger boys tried to do this year was shore up the throws.  "We knew James (Hingleton) was going to have a great senior year, but we wanted to build around him for the long haul.  So, I went out and twisted Mark's arm to join us."  Mark Mc Kim is the new throwing coach at South View.  Still, he is an old face, as Mc Kim coached the South View Middle Patriots to multiple Cumberland County Division One titles.  "I knew Mark had the experience in coaching throwers and that he had the same basic philosophy on coaching.  This choice was a no-brainer."  Autry said.  Mc Kim expects great things from his throwers.  He inherited Senteria Weeks and Taneisha and Takera Knowles on the girls side, but added Charlissa Moore, who looks to be a contributor very early.  On the boys' side Mc Kim has totally retooled the line-up, with Hingleton being the only veteran.  New faces may mean a new attitude as the throwers will look to be a big part of what the Tigers accomplish this spring.

So, for the 2009 Spring Track season at South View it will be a combination of old and new reaching for title number eight in a row and capturing a little piece of history: if both the boys and girls win this year, they will be the only teams to ever win a track and field conference title in the entire history of the Two Rivers Conference.  This is the last year before that conference is dissolved.  Now that's the way to go out.

Tigers Qualify Several Athletes to the State Meet As Indoor Season Continues at Reid Ross on Saturday, January 3rd
By David St. Hubbins, SVTF Correspondent, January 3, 2008

Fayetteville - Like most track and field programs during the Christmas break, the South View Tigers did not have a full roster for Saturday's polar bear meet at Reid Ross.  "We have not put a full team on the track or in the field, yet.  But we are looking forward to getting to full strength."  Coach Autry said afterward.  Led by seniors Jaira Britt, Aaron Holmes, Cedric Wilson and Jonathan Williams, the Tigers were the best team on the track Saturday at Reid Ross Classical School, although they were not in the field.  Autry commented that he was concerned about getting back to being a balanced team before the spring arrives.  "One thing that has always made me proud is that we have been balanced for the last decade or so.  I don't want to get away from that."

There were several outstanding individual performances, with veterans qualifying and freshmen and sophomores continuing to improve.  Sophomore Connor Mang's second place finish in the 3200 meters, Jerome Hasty's third overall finish in the 500 and sophomore Justine Serje's win in the 1600 combined with the big points that were being wracked up by the upper classmen led the Tiger boys to another team victory and a very limited Lady Tiger squad to a third place team finish.  Autry continued to stress when questioned about the win that victory at this point is not as important as consistent improvement and the continuing quest for balance.  "Believe me, we still have a very long way to go."  He said.

Everyone at South View would like to thank all the parents, alumni and coaches who pitched in and helped make the meet a huge success.

The Tigers are hoping to head to Greenville Rose next weekend and then on to the January 16-17 meet at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Kenny Hinman 9th Among NC Athletes in Seeded Race at Footlocker SE Regional; Annette Sem Turns In Solid Performance In Girls' Junior/Senior Race
By David St. Hubbins, SVTF Correspondent, November 29, 2008
Charlotte, NC - South View junior Kenny Hinman turned out a huge performance in the the Footlocker Southeast boys' seeded race at Charlotte's McAlpine Park on Saturday.  Hinman raced to a personal best time of 16:06, moving him into the ninth spot on the South View All Time Cross Country List.  The person in eighth is his older brother, South View legend and two-time state champion, Josh Wyatt (c/o 2004).  With another year to go, that will be an interesting discussion in the Hinman household.

Senior Annette Sem also ran at the meet and finished out her high school cross country career with another outstanding performance.  Sem said afterward "I had fun.  And I still have track to go.  I am really looking forward to that."  Although she is wrapping up her career, Sem is hardly done with running.  Her short list of schools is shrinking and she will announce what college she will be running for in the coming weeks.

An enthusiastic Coach Autry stated "We're just so proud of both of these kids.  They are the reason you do this crazy job.  At this stage no one is making them do this.  This is all on their own.  You can't coach desire."  Both Sem and Hinman have sporadically worked out with the South View Indoor team over the last month, they have had to divide their time up with the school swim team and in Hinman's case, Team Decker.  We were really excited about Kenny getting the opportunity to run for Coach Mc Collum.  "She does an outstanding job and really has a grasp on the science of running.  That will prove to be another feather in Kenny's hat."  Autry said.

From here, Hinman will turn his attention to the USATF National Championship in Virginia on December 13th.  Then it will be a well-deserved break the star junior.  Sem, will begin to focus on the indoor season more and ore as January approaches.

ALERT!!!  Kenny Hinman Wins USATF Region III JO XC Championship in Virginia!  Leads Team Decker to Team Title!!!
By David St. Hubbins, SVTF Correspondent, November 23, 2008
Richmond, VA - South View junior standout Kenny Hinman won the USATF Junior Olympic Division III Cross Country Championship on Saturday at Pole Green Park in
Richmond, Virginia.  Hinman's 16:41.47 was paced his USATF team to the team title and earned him and his teammates a spot at the National Championship back in Virginia on December 13th.    Afterwards, Coach Donna Mc Collum, Head Coach of Team Decker, said "Kenny... ran great and it is a course that you would think was made specifically for him.  He is a very humble and a great team player.  I consider him very coachable.  Once he saw that he had such a huge lead, he backed off to save himself for Footlocker."

"The course was a lot of fun.  I knew I had to be smart and back off once I had a lead.  Right now we are just getting ready for Footlocker and Nationals."  Hinman said after the race.  He continues to workout with the swim team at South View also.  After the National Championship race held in Virginia, Hinman will take a couple of weeks off then return for the remainder of the indoor season.  Coach Autry said "There is no rush on Kenny.  We want him to represent Team Decker and South View well."

Indoor Track Roster Almost Complete; Team Still Awaits Football Players
By David St. Hubbins, SVTF Correspondent, November 23, 2008
Hope Mills - The South View Track Program is close to finalizing its roster for the 2008-2009 indoor season.  South View's victory in the football playoffs has allowed the football team to continue on to the third round of the playoffs.  "This is a problem we don't mind."  Coach Autry said.  "We proud of our football team and look forward to following them all the way to Chapel Hill."  He continued.  The Tigers are also awaiting some of its key distance runners who are wrapping up an extended run in cross country.  Kenny Hinman is still running USATF and has qualified with Team Decker to run at the National Championships in Virginia.  Others, including Dana Johnson, Tommy Baldridge and Chris Small are gearing up for Footlocker South in Charlotte over Thanksgiving weekend.

Connor Mang and Jesse Autry will travel to Liberty University for the December 5th and 6th Liberty Christmas Invitational.  Because of county rules, both runners will have to compete unattached, but it is still a great opportunity.  The full Tiger team will look to open its indoor season on Saturday, December 13th at Reid Ross Classical School at 10:30am.  The full indoor track schedule is currently being finalized.

Event-Shortened Meet Produced Some Solid Performances for Several Young Tigers
By Herb Foochelmeister, SVTF Correspondent, March 24, 2008
Hope Mills - Thursday's track meet was shortened due to scheduling conflicts with the South View and Lumberton facilities and two different soccer games.  Still, the Tigers of South View turned in some solid performances with a majority of their veterans resting for Saturday's upcoming Phoenix Invitation at Elon University.

On the boys' side Arturo Trevino continued to excel in the discus with an impressive throw of over 130 feet.  Quinton Pate won the long jump while Zo Garrick (800m), Kaleb Lowry (1600m) and Chris Small (3200m) were also individual winners.  The Tigers boys dominated the distance events with their younger runners as they took 1-2-3 in the 800 and none of the top 11 spots in the field of 23.  The mile saw much the same with South View rolling to a 1-2-3 finish with four of the top five finishers over all.  The race of the night for the boys may have been that of the Tiger sophomores and freshmen in the 3200 meters.  Chris Small shocked everyone with an impressive time of 10:44.30 in leading the Tiger freshmen and sophomore boys to the first seven spots.  Coach Autry was very pleased with having all seven of thoese "young guns" under the 12 minute mark.  "Right now we have a 25 second spread in our top four freshmen.  And Cole Spear was just awesome tonight as he approaches that 12 minute threshold."  Autry said afterward.  He continued, "Chris Small is in the zone, right now.  Every race he is getting better and better."

On the Lady Tigers' side of things, Senteria Weeks and Takera Knowles continued to shine in the field with impressive throws in the discus and shot.  "Both are on the verge of qualifying.  It's just a matter of time."  Autry said.  Helena Rafalsky led the ladies on the track with two second place finishes in the 1600 and 800 meters, qualifying for regionals in the prior.

Partial Tiger Team Runs Well on March 13th
By Herb Foochelmeister, SVTF Correspondent, March 14, 2008
Hope Mills - South View edged Terry Sanford and Cape Fear despite sitting out several events on Thursday.  In an attempt to rest several athletes before the Tiger Relays on Saturday, March 15th, Coach Autry acknowledged that this could be a meet the Tigers would lose.  But in the end, Tiger balance proved the difference as the South View sprinters, throwers, jumpers and hurdlers scored big to make up for an absent distance and mid-distance squad.

Hope Mills - On Thursday the South View Track and Field team took on the Colts of Cape Fear in their opening meet of the 2008 outdoor season.  There was a lot to be excited about.  But despite the win, Coach Autry was quick to point out that there was a lot of work to be done.  "We did some things very well, for this early in the season.  But there are clearly some areas where we have to invest a little more time and energy."

Standouts for the Tigers included Arturo Trevino in the throws. Trevino placed first and second in the discus and shot, respectively, while missing qualifying for the discus by just an inch.  Ebonie Jackson rejoined Quamarah Samuel to give the Lady Tigers the one-two punch in the girls' jumps that appeared very promising in their freshman season.  Those two picked right up where they left off, but their performance compounded by the reemergence of Jacy Osborn in the high jump, who seems healthy and ready to contend for an individual championship.  The addition of freshman Tatyana Bryant adds more depth to a girls' jump squad that seemed in danger after the graduation of two-time all state performer Whitney Jordan (now at UNC-Wilmington).  Jackson, Osborn, Samuel and Bryant dominated the jumps all afternoon.

On the track, Lakeisha Parker put on a show, dominating the 400, 200 and anchoring the winning 4x200.  Helena Rafalski ran an impressive anchor leg of the girls' 4x800 taking the lead for the first time on the final lap, en route to a 2:39 split and the win.  Autry was really pleased with his young girls in the 4x800, "They are really stepping up.  They all ran a massive PR today.  And that is what we look for; continual improvement."

As expected, Reggie Stubbs and "Rocket" Williams went one-two in the 400 meters, with Stubbs qualifying for regionals.  Darius Ingram continued to come of age as he won the 100 and 200.  Anthony Stephens proved a worthy addition as he took the high jump with an impressive early season mark of 5-10 and Jeremy Mc Laurin led his jump and sprint squad to impressive wins in the field and on the track.

The surprise of the day may have been sophomore Jose Panduro winning the 1600 meters going away with a time of 4:57.6.  "I was not suprised.  And I know Jose wasn't."  Autry said later.  "Jose is just ready to take his place in the circle of life."  Breaking the five minute mark is always a big step for boys' distance runners.  When announced, Panduro's performance was met with cheers from teammates and spectators.

From here, the Tigers will prepare for the Tiger Relays on Saturday, March 15th at South View.  South View is schedule to compete on Thursday, March 13th at home, but will hold several of its athletes out in preparation for the Saturday meet.  Keep checking back to stay informed on the upcoming week.

Tigers Run on 27th at Pinecrest

By Herb Foochelmeister, SVTF Correspondent,  December 29, 2007
Southern Pines - South View took a very small delegation to Pinecrest High School on Thursday to face off against Richmond, Southern Lee, Union Pines and host Pinecrest.  Despite not having anyone qualify, Coach Autry was please with the overall performance of his team.  He commented afterward, "Hey, this is the most we have ever done over the Christmas break.  I am really excited."

The ladies only had five athletes, but Jaira Britt continued to look solid as she returns to form.  Jakobie Smith just missed qualifying in the 1000 meter run and Annette Sem and Amanda Anderson looked very good in the mile and Sem turned around and did the 3200 just for fun.

On the boys' side Autry was very excited about the performance of the young Tiger distance runners, as they looked good in the 1600.  "We just had some fun and did some different things with this meet.  But for some of these boys, they were racing for a spot in the UNC meet next week.  Sean Grim was a monster today."  Autry said.

South View will travel to the Eddie Smith Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill next Saturday for their first "indoor" indoor meet.  Click below for results and pictures of the December 27th meet and more on the upcoming UNC meet.

By Xiun Chowpang, SVTF Correspondent,  December 21, 2007
Cameron, NC - South View Track and Field braved the cold and took about one-third of it's team to Union Pines on the 19th.  With the Christmas holidays underway, Coach Autry explained how they they knew they would be short-handed.  "The most important thing is for us is to qualify when we get a chance.  So, if we were missing a few folks, that was fine."  Derrick Poage qualified in the 1000 meters and Lakeisha Parker qualified in the 500 meters.  Near qualifiers included Dwayne Townsend in the 1000, Jakobie Smith in the 500 and Kenny Hinman in the 3200 meters.

Tigers Roll Big At Union Pines on Saturday

Reggie Stubbs (right) had a big day, qualifying in two individual events and running a leg of the winning 4x400 meter relay.  All photos by Mallory Nichols.
By Xiun Chowpang, SVTF Correspondent,  December 10, 2007
Cameron, NC - The South View track team traveled to Union Pines High School Saturday to participate in it's first track and field meet of the 2007-2008 indoor season.  Of course, since there are no indoor facilities in the area the meet was held outdoors.  For this reason, these meets are called "polar bear" meets.

There were several standout performances and state qualifiers.  The boys were paced by Reggie Stubbs, who qualified in the 55 and 300 meter dashes.  Stubbs also ran a leg of the winning 4x400, which just missed qualifying for the state meet.  Other state qualifiers included the boys 4x800 relay of Clayton Pierce, Hasahn Mills, Cedric Wilson and Christian Wiscovitch.  Mills also won and qualified in the 500 meter run.  Dwayne Townsend and Derrick Poage both qualified in the 1600 meter run with 4:35 and 4:36, respectively.

Freshman Tommy Baldridge ran a very low 1600 meter time of 5:09 and showed that he may be a contributor before all is said and done.  Photos by Mallory Nichols.

On the girls side, Lakeisha Parker served notice that she has arrived on Saturday.  The sophomore paced the Lady Tiger 4x800 meter relay to a qualifying time and won the 500 meters with a near miss on meeting the state standard.  Other girls on the qualifying 4x800 meters included Jaira Britt, Jakobie Smith and newcomer Catlyn Rogers.

Coach Autry was unavailable for comment immediately after the meet, but assistant coach James Jasper explained that the coaches were very happy overall.  "This was a very good day for us.  The kids are working hard and I think it showed.  we have never been this far ahead on qualifying after just one meet."

Other standout performers included Taneisha Knowles, Jakobie Smith, Candace Washington and Radio Primus in the hurdles, Amanda Anderson faired very well in the 1600.  Quamarah Samuel in the long and triple jumps.  And the girls 4x400 of Lakeisha Parker, Caneisha Lloyd, Quamarah Samuel and Jakobie Smith came away with a win, just missing a qualifying time.

Other standout boys included Arturo Trevino in the shot put, Jose Arias in the high jump, Matt Brown in the 300 and 4x400, Jonathan "the Rocket" Williams in the 500 and 4x400 meters, Kenny Hinman in the 1600 and Kaleb Lowry and Kyle Elmore in the 3200 meter run.

The Tigers will next host a meet at Reid Ross Classical School on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville on December 15th.  Field events are scheduled to begin at 10am with the track events starting at 10:30.  If anyone has questions or are interested in participating, please contact Coach Jesse Autry at [email protected].

Tiger Boys Win the Bill Carver Invitational; Lady Tigers Finish Fourth!!!
James Hingleton, Tevin Druaghon and Arturo Trevino are a big part of the reason for South View's success in 2008.
By Herb Foochelmeister, SVTF Correspondent, April 13, 2008
Fayetteville - On April 12th the South View's boys won the Bill Carver Invitational, despite bad weather, meet administration issues and coach temper-tantrums.  Coach Autry made it clear he was not happy with his team's performance on Saturday.  Despite being off their A-game, they found a way to place the ladies fourth and the boys in first.

South View Men Tie for Win at Phoenix Invitational on March 22nd; Lady Tigers Roar with Outstanding Performances (results)
Elon, NC - With two events to go, Coach Jesse Autry seemed surprised that his team was within reach of winning the 2nd Annual Phoenix Invitational on Saturday.  "We never really went up with an intention of doing anything more than trying to get our veterans qualified and our younger athletes some experience.  This was a real surprise."  Autry said when it was over.  South View got what they wanted and more.

Anthony Mc Donald got things going for South View when he won the high jump with a new meet record of six feet four inches.  But from there things got better.  Motewa Mc Millan finished fourth in the long jump while Reggie Stubbs took third and fourth in the 200 and 400 meters.  Michael Moore and Aaron Holmes placed well in the 110 and 300 hurdles, respectively.  When South View's boys did not have a scorer in the 800 or 1600 meters, team placement was the furthest thing from their minds.  "We were pleased with much of what we had done, but disappointed in other ways."  Autry pointed out.

The highly touted Tiger distance boys were struggling.  Other than a couple of solid performances from their all-sophomore and all-freshmen 4x800 squads (both there to gain experience) and solid runs by Kyle Elmore in the 1600 and Cedric Wilson in the 800, things were not going extremely well for the distance men of South View.  "I was very pleased with our 400 guys overall, as Jonathan (Williams) finished seventh overall.  But, I thought I had just worked the mid-distance and distance boys hard over the last week, and coming off the Tiger Relays, it was a lot to expect them to be at their absolute best."

But then it happened.  Dwayne Townsend and Kenny Hinman, despite sitting around and waiting for their race for over ten hours, took complete charge of the 3200 meters.  Setting a blistering early pace, Derrick Poage and the rest of the field was left in their wake.  As the race unfolded, it became obvious that all the two-milers were just tired.  Going into the four laps, Nick Carter of Enloe moved up to contend with Hinman and Townsend.  As the race unfolded, Townsend and Carter pulled away and Poage began his last 800 surge to the front that has become his trademark.  South View ended up with first (Townsend), second (Poage) and seventh (Hinman) for a total of 20 points.

Going into the 4x400 it was a dead heat between the Southern Durham, New Bern and South View.  All schools were allowed to run b-teams, and if they counted, the Tigers would have stood alone.  But in the end, it was Southern Durham and South View tied with 60 points.  New Bern was third with 59.  Autry was pleased but quick to point out that the more important objective of qualifying for regionals was met in some cases and not in others.  "We still have a lot of work to do.  This meet was fun, but not the end-all-be-all of our season."

The Lady Tigers performed well all day, and in the end qualfied Jakobie Smith in the 800 meters and Ebonie Jackson in the triple jump.  Simone Harrell's overall fifth place finish was another qualifying time.  And the girls 4x400 was a few seconds off their personal best, but still was good enough to finish sixth overall.

The best relay of the day for South View may have been it's ladies' 4x100 as Tynesha Knowles, LaTempest Mc Leod, Ayla Knowles and Leslie Christian rolled to a win in theri heat and a qualifying mark of 53.69.  Sprint Coach James Jasper was thrilled with the performance of the sprinter girls.  "We have been looking for the right combination and I think we may have found it today."  He said.

The distance girls fared well, as they had one single objective: learn.  The South View distance ladies are almost entirely freshmen and sophomores.  But they keep finding ways to come through.  The performances of Justine Serje and Brittney Stevens were very exciting, as both girls went under 14:00 in their first ever 3200 meter race.

Solid performances were also turned in by Quamarah Samuel and Tatyana Bryant in the triple jump and Dana Johnson in the 800 meters.  Julie Sem ran to a new PR in the 1600.

From here the Tigers will focus on a great two weeks of practice in preparation for meets on April third, tenth and then the Bill Carver Invitational on Saturday, April 12th.  "The mission is the same."  Autry said afterward.  "Each week we will endeavor to become better and better and work toward our ultimate goals, which are not set for the month of April, but set for the month of May."

South View Sweeps the 2008 Tiger Relays
By Herb Foochelmeister, SVTF Correspondent, March 16, 2008
Hope Mills - On Friday before the Tiger Relays Coach Autry gathered his young distance boys and threw out a challenge: "The best distance program of the last decade is coming to your track tomorrow.  How are you going to respond?"  Twenty-four hours later Autry could hardly believe his team's response.  Before the meet the 11-year coach pointed out that he felt his young distance squad was nervous and struggling to find their focus.  His young squad responded with a solid performance from both the boys and girls.  "I knew they could do well, but I had no idea they

they would rise up like that."  Autry said afterward.  The attitude the distance athletes brought on Saturday proved infectious, as South View would sweep the Tiger Relays for a third straight year.

The Tigers proved to be the deepest all around team with the most depth in the annual Tiger Relays.  The meet, which allows most, if not all, of a team to participate, proved to be the perfect format for the large deep men's and women's teams from South View.

The Tigers had several qualifiers and more winners on Saturday, as they roared their way to victory.  Tiger standouts in the field included included Arturo Trevino, Motewa Mc Millan, Anthony Mc Donald, Tatyana Bryant, Ebonie Jackson, Jessica Baxley and Takera Knowles.  In the hurdles Leslie Christian, Aaron Holmes, Michael Moore, Simone Harrell and Candace Washington wracked up big points and/or qualified for regionals.  Lakeisha Parker continued to shine in the relays along with veterans Tynesha Knowles, Reggie Stubbs, Jonathan Williams and Jakobie Smith.  The entire distance squad excelled, as the younger runners ran their way to "PRs" all day long and the veterans qualified and set records en route to scoring massive amounts of points.  Derrick Poage and Dwayne Townsend ran their way straight to the NCRunners top two spots for the 1600 meters and led seven total Tiger boys under 5:00 in the event.

"It was a good day."  Autry commented after the meet.  "But we have a long way to go, a bunch to learn and a lot of work to do."

Tigers Run Big At Indoor State Meet
By Don Kiote, SVTF Correspondent,  February 10, 2008

Chapel Hill - South View had a solid night on the track Saturday in the State Championship at UNC-Chapel Hill.  Eight Tiger athletes medalled and more received ribbons.  "It was a really good night for us.  We have never had so many athletes make it to the podium during indoor or outdoor.  This was really something."  Coach Autry stated afterward.

On the girls' side, a standout performance was turned in by Lakeisha Parker, who ran splits of 1:01 and 2:29 in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter relays, respectively.  Parker also ran the 1000 meters, in which she finished 15th.  Senior Jakobie Smith ran to an impressive seventh overall finish in the 1000 meters.  Smith's patience paid off as she sat in the very back until halfway through the second to last lap.  This allowed for a solid kick that took her straight to a ribbon for her performance.  Jaira Britt and Annette Sem joined Parker and Smith on the girls' 3200 meter relay that was awarded a ribbon for an overall eighth place finish.  Coach Autry seemed pleased with his girls' effort as he pointed out, "Our girls numbers were down a bit during indoor this winter and to see these ladies come up here and perform well is really a satisfying experience."

The boys brought their "A-Game" to Chapel Hill.  Hard work paid off and led the boys to nine medals for eight different athletes.  Autry was especially pleased with senior Dwayne Townsend, who ran a courageous race up front in the 1600 meters.  Townsend also won the first heat of the 3200.  "Dwayne missed a medal by a couple hundredths of a second in the mile, but I thought he really had the race of the night for us."  Autry insisted.  Townsend's 5th place finish left him with a ribbon and new personal best in the event.

Autry also pointed out that sophomore Kenny Hinman had an outstanding race, as he paced the 3200 meter race along with Townsend for a long while.  Autry stated, "Kenny is a rock.  He is just consistent and good every single time.  Every week that kid gains experience and strength.  Folks had better look out."  Derrick Poage finished third in the 3200 meters and said afterward he could just feel the 4x800 he had run earlier about halfway through the race.  "I learned a lot tonight."  The junior All State athlete said later.  "I just have so much respect for Dakota (Peachee of West Johnston).  He really deserved this thing tonight."

Along with Poage, Cedric Wilson, Clayton Pierce and Christian Wiscovitch ran to the bronze medal in the 3200 meter relay.  "We knew we were better than where we were seeded," Wiscovitch commented later.  Junior Clayton Pierce fought off nerves to keep the Tigers close in the first leg while Cedric Wilson really moved the Tigers into striking distance with a 2:03 split in the second.  Christian Wiscovitch was solid in moving the Tigers into a medal position in the third leg and Derrick Poage brought it home with a sub-2:00 split.

The surprise of the night for South View had to be the mens' 1600 meter relay joining the 3200 relay squad at the podium.  South View had lost a man last month who was vital to th relays success and that had become a real concern.  But as Senior Reggie Stubbs pointed out, "We had a few breaks go our way and here we are."  Joining Stubbs, who also earned a ribbon for his eighth place run in the 500 meters, was Jonathan Williams, Aaron Holmes and Dominique Wallace.  "Wallace who recently rejoined the squad after some time off, stepped in and filled a void after the Tigers took a major hit with the loss of Hasahn Mills.  Wallace was on the bronze-winning 3200 meter relay from a year ago.  despite his return, Coach Autry stuck with the squad that qualified earlier in the season.  "I rarely shake a relay up before a championship.  So, everyone knew the 4x8 was set.  But in the 4x4 our hand was forced."  Autry said later.  "The truth is, Christian Wiscovitch had really earned the spot on that squad, but in a very unselfish move Christian approached me to suggest that Dominique run.  He felt the hand-offs with Dominique were a bit better and that could be the difference.  He also said he wanted Dominique to 'get his shot.'  It was incredibly unselfish on his part."  Autry pointed out.  He continued, "I think that is one very key thing for our boys' team: these guys really like each other.  God knows they are goofy, but they are truly a team."

Although Autry does not put a lot of stock in track team titles at the state level, its noteworthy to point out that the the boys finished 10th overall as a team.  Autry smiled and said, "that's a nice accomplishment, but if we ever want to know who has the best 'team,' we'll do like wrestling and have a playoff of 'teams' as well as individual championships.  But that's just an opinion, and you know what they're worth."

Hope Mills - South View held it's first ever warm-up intra-squad scrimmage for track and field this weekend on its home track.  After trying to get an early meet against a few other schools, Coach Autry talked it over with the rest of the coaching staff and decided to go ahead and let the athletes compete against each other.  "We wanted to give our younger athletes some kind of feel for how a track meet unfolds and how each individual must be self-reliant and ready."  Autry stated.  On top of that, Autry pointed out: "No matter what, we needed another time trial on the kids."  Coach James Jasper added, "We learned a lot today.  It was fun for the kids, but it was informative for us.  I think it was have a good idea where we want to go from here."

The Tigers were without several key upperclassmen, as most of the top cross country

From left: Senior Dan Armstrong, sophomore Michael Cross, junior Kyle Elmore and sophomore Jose Panduro lead the way in the 1500 meter run on December 1st at South View.  Photos by Mallory Nichols.

runners and varsity football players do not return to practice until this week.  "Yeah, after Footlocker (Southeast U.S. Cross Country Regionals) and the football playoffs, we just felt those kids needed some rest.  They hung around and we had to force several of them to take a break.  But no matter what, we want them mentally fresh as we get into 2008."  Autry said afterward.  Autry was unsure to what extent those athletes who will return on Monday will be participating in Saturday's meet at Union Pines High School.  "Right now, we just want to ease them in and keep things in perspective.  It is still really early.  Besides, we are really happy about what our younger athletes were doing this week; we'll be fine."  Autry pointed out.

Although a scrimmage is a glorified practice, there were plenty of noteworthy performances and surprises on Saturday.  Darius Ingram who has "hung around" practice quite a bit since football was over and just seemed ready to go, so Autry told him to get in there and "have some fun."  Ingram, who has not thrown since middle school, surprised everyone by throwing the shot put 40 feet and 9 inches.  That, combined with a win in the 55 meter dash (6.66 seconds, unconverted) and breaking the minute mark in the 400 meters were all pleasant surprises.  "Darius has developed into a solid contributor for us."  Autry said.

Jose Arias, Aaron Holmes, Reggie Stubbs, Cedric Wilson and Kyle Elmore were all individual winners on the boys' side.  Other impressive performances from the boys were turned in by Michael Moore, Hasahn Mills, who was second in two events, Jonathan Williams and Dan Armstrong.  Young runners to watch included freshman Tommy Baldridge, who was third in the 1500, Kenny Buccafurri, who is quietly improving in the middle distances, Julian Johnson in the middle distance events and Jermaine Davis, who is much improved from a year ago in the sprints.  Autry was also very pleased with the fact that seven boys went under the 5 minute mark in the 1500 and only one was a senior.

On the girls' side of things, the stars were shining, as Lauren Lee and Annette Sem fought it out all the way to the kick in the 1500, Lakeisha Parker ran away from the field in the 800 and 400, Quamrah Samuel won the triple jump and Ayanna Gibbs dominated in the 55 meters.  "We knew those girls would roll.  But what we are excited about was the rise of some of our veteran girls who we have been needing to step up."  Candice Washington won the hurdles and looked solid in the 400 meters.  "She is going to have to really contribute this year."  Autry said afterward.  Radiance Primus was also much improved.  Cassandra Serje and Amanda Anderson are hold-overs from cross country and faired very well in the 1500.  La Tempest Mc Leod looked solid in the sprints, as well.

Autry was obviously thrilled with newcomer Caniesha Lloyd, who won the long jump and was second in the 400 meters.  "She is going to really help us.  And she is only going to get better.  I think she is an athlete to watch."  Autry said.  Freshman Amanda Corney also surprised with a strong performance in the 1500, as she led all the new girls in that event.  The coaches have been excited about the new distance girls since they showed up.  Coach Laura Valentine was very pleased with the young girls, as she stated afterward, "They just all work hard and never complain.  That is translating into success for them."
