South View High School Cross Country 2002

2002 Eastern Regional Championships

Two Rivers

Hope Mills, NC - The South View men extended the best season in school history another week by turning in a strong performance at the Regional Championships.  The ladies qualified for a run at states a second year in a row.

The Tiger men were led by Robert Longoria, who won the race individually.  Jason Williams turned in an impressive performance by taking the silver medal and Josh Wyatt was the bronze medallist.  Paul Longoria's 5th place run and Brian Mc Lean's 6th place finish landed both of them on the All Eastern Region Team.  Johnathan Isom just missed All Region honors by placing 8th.  Jesse Ramirez finished an impressive 13th by setting another personal PR.  With all seven of South View's runners in by number 13, it was obvious that it was the Tigers' day.

Longoria, Williams and Wyatt were patient as they followed the leaders for the first 500 meters.  As the runners approached the half mile mark Longoria moved to the front and Williams and Wyatt moved into the front pack.  By the mile mark, they were three of the top four.  Paul Longoria, Mc Lean, Isom and Ramirez moved their pack into the top 20 by that time.  The last two miles saw the Tigers inch their way to the front and to the title.

To the Tiger men, this race was particularly important because they were edged by Pinecrest a season ago at the Regioinal meet in Lumberton.  Pinecrest, a solid program with a great tradition, was second this weekend.  Hoggard's men placed third while Jacksonville's men got the fourth state qualifying spot.

The Lady Tigers proved to be good enough to advance, even though they did not have their best race.  Coach Autry and Coach Newton were both very pleased that the ladies fought it out, despite being hit with illness this week.  "We live to fight another day" claimed Autry.  Whitney Speicher paced the girls by finishing 4th and earning All-Region status.  Her time made her only the second female in South View history to run under 20:00.  Dawn Mc Millan, Laura Mumau, Ashley Bladridge and Jennifer Galloway were the Tiger top five.  Morgan Schultingkemper and Rachel Burns rounded out the Lady Tiger regional squad.

For more on getting to South View, visit mapquest.com.

If you are coming from the south, you want to get on I-95 and head toward Fayetteville.  South View is in Hope Mills, NC.  It is just off highway 301 (I-95 Business).  Take the first Fayetteville exit off 95 (this is important).  Once on 301 you will drive past the Hope Mills exit.    You will come to a stoplight and some road construction.  Go through.  At the very next light, turn left, crossing over onto the service road.  You will have to do a u-turn of sorts onto the service road that will take you back to the south for about 200 meters.  Elk Road is on your right.  Turn onto Elk Road.  South View is 1.1 miles down on your left.  Park in Football stadium parking lot.

Coming from the west you can take highway 401 to Fayetteville.  This turns into Raeford Road once in the Fayetteville area.  Go to Hope Mills Road and turn right (the only way you can turn).  Follow into Hope Mills.  Drive to Hope Mills Lake and take left at Lake stop light.  At the top of the hill, turn left onto Legion Road.  Almost a mile down you will come to Elk Road.  Turn right and South View is only about half a mile down.  Park in Football stadium parking lot.

Coming from the east you will want to take highway 87 to Fayetteville.  Go to I-95.  Turn south onto I-95 and go to Hope Mills.  When you pass Black and Decker on your right, you know you are about 3.5 miles away.  After Black and Decker, turn right onto the service road at the next stoplight.  Elk Road is about 200 meters south on that service road.  Turn right onto Elk Road  South View will be 1.1 miles down on your left.  Park in the football stadium parking lot.
