The Australian flag has the union jack in the top left corner to represent our ties with Britain. The five stars represent the Southern Cross and the federal star under the union jack represents the states of the Commonwealth of Australia. The design arose from a competition in 1901 and had minor changes until it was officially adopted in 1953.

Australian Aboriginal Flag

The Australian Aboriginal flag is made up of three colours - black for the Aboriginal people, red to represent the earth and the people's spiritual association with it, yellow for the sun which is the giver of all life. It was designed by Harold Thomas an Aboriginal artist. Formally adopted in July 1995 but it has been in use since 1971.
