Animals Accommodated

Finally the animals could move into their new habitat. And all of their furniture.....roosts, nests, food dispensers, water containers, swimming pool for the poultry and water trough, food bucket and bed for the goat. Shelley lived in the Sheraton with the young ducks while the new shed was being built. The drakes were separated but one afternoon, I came home to mayhem - drakes fighting. I thought that I hadn't closed the gate between the pens properly but no, it was on again the next afternoon. Shelley had learnt how to undo the bolt on the gate separating the pens so presumably she got bored and opened the gate to let the drakes fight. Thus, every bolt has to have a Shelley-proof clip put on it. Next she learnt how to open the different catches on the gates between paddocks so they also need clips.

Shelley has the middle pen and is locked up at night. In the day she is let out into the yard or brought up to a grazing area around my house. There are three levels of security for her. The chooks don't always want to play with her so they are mainly kept separated.

Poultry Accommodated

The poultry now have a big yard which will eventually be turfed so they don't need to be let out. So far, the old drakes have not shown any inclination for fighting and the young roosters are tolerating each other so nobody else is locked up yet and they can choose their own pens.
