Socio-economic Forces ~ Fishing
“The story of how I fought through the depression is not my story alone.
It is the story of hundreds of fisherman along the coast who fought through
as I did and who fought through with me.” ~ Billy Tom ...
  • 1928 was “The Fifty Cent Year”.
  • Dealers paid 50 cents a hundred pounds for every type of fish and dinner cost 50 cents.
  • Buying conditions in 1928 Nova Scotia were horrendous – resembled a Feudal System.
  • Fisherman received very little for their catch and paid high prices for their supplies – e.g. fishermen paid 70 cents/lb.for twine and received only 7 cents/lb. for market lobsters.
  • Average fisherman made between $200 and $300 for a whole year's work!
  • Trawlers flooding local markets with fish at bottom of the barrel prices.
  • Apathy prevalent among "defeated" fishermen .
