Broken Chains

It feels so strange to be this free,
to be realeased from the hurting chains
that tied me to one who knew only disdain,
who tried to change what could only be me.

I have more than paid the required fee
to regain the freedom that was stolen;
I cried until my eyes were too swollen
to see the mockery my master made of me.

What could be had was all he could see,
and he took continuously to quench his desire.
He even stole from me the warmth of the fire
that once burned loyally for him in me.

Yet now, broken, the thick chains I hear
finally falling from my aching wrists;
death has come at last for this torturous tryst
and the new horizons ahead I do not fear.
