I bought my 68 in '96.It was bought as a Malibu with a numbers matching title,13637. During the teardown i found that a Malibu VIN had been glued over top of a SS vin,13837.Since then i found that the car is actually 2 cars,a Malibu rear and a SS front with cowl. The SS VIN was still attached when i found the Malibu VIN over top of it,BUT since the Malibu VIN was over top of the SS VIN whoever done it had to bend the SS VIN down and bent it pretty bad.Since the SS VIN was so bent so bad in '97 i went ahead and took it out.I have checked the numbers on the cowl and they match the SS VIN and i have also checked both the VIN's at DMV to see if they came up stolen.I had them do a title/VIN search and the Malibu came up to me and the previous owner that i bought the Malibu/SS from. The SS vin/Title didn't come up to anyone.I talked to the previous owner about 4 months ago and he said he bought it as a Malibu with no motor or trans. Im guessing maybe that the SS was totaled by a rear end accident and that they stuck the Malibu back end on it to preserve the SS.Since it was totaled(mabye not by the ins co,no records)they didn't have the title to the SS so they put the Malibu VIN on it in-order register it. I would like to know what exactly would go on with the title.Would the car be taken by DMV or something,or would i just not be able to attain a title for the SS.Like anyone,i don't want my car taken.Or,if somehow they could find the original or last registered owner of the SS VIN/Title.If i were to get a title for the SS i would rather it not be a "salvaged" title either. If i were to sell it (Never) i would tell the owner of the history though. Thats my best guess.
