Some area students are trying to get a favorite cereal character a new job.
Cap'n Crunch, a fictional breakfast cereal character for the Quaker Oats Company, should be made an admiral for his 35 years of service these students say.
He is a cartoon-like characted featured on the cereal's box and in television commercials. His job is to defeat the Soggies that threaten to turn the cereal into mush, according to these students.
Two students initially contacted Quaker Oats about the matter. A company representative suggested they start a petition.
Since then, the two have been collecting signatures and boosting support in Waterloo and the surrounding areas.
Pete Tarka, who works at the Hy-Vee at Crossroads Shopping Center, posted a copy of the petition so his employees could sign it.
"That's a great idea. Kind of wierd, but that makes it fun, all the worth while," said Jenny Clark, a West High School senior.
Martin Dodge, a Columbus High School junior, said the idea sounded "cool."
The petition is even posted on the Internet, and has recieved names from all over the world. The last recorded total was 1,336 names. The original goal was 500.
But the organizers want to send Quaker Oats 2,000 signatures and are asking for more help.
If interested in signing the petition write to:
