bitch, bitch, bitch...

What can I say, I have plenty of opinions on plenty of things. And, if I ever get time, I'll start bitching about those things here. Anywhere from football players to my job, from school dress codes to why the city wastes our money by putting up a "No Parking During Snow Removal" sign wheren there's already a "No Parking This Side" sign there. So if I ever find time to start writing, you can find it here. So check back often.

"Virus Warning" Chain Letters

"Virus Warning" Chain Letters

Ok, these things just piss me off. I constantly spend long amounts of time replying to the senders of these things telling them how stupid the letter is, and how it just can't possibly be true, yet I still recieve them. Let's take for instance the "Budweiser Frog Screen Saver" one. I just got this AGAIN! Here's what it says:

Someone is sending out a very cute screensaver of the Budweiser Frogs. If you download it, you will lose everything! Your hard drive will crash and someone from the Internet will get your screen name and password! DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! It just went into circulation yesterday, as far as we know. Please distribute this message. This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it. This information was announced yesterday morning from Microsoft. Please share it with everyone that might access the Internet. Once again, pass this along to EVERYONE in your address book so that this may be stopped. AOL has said that this is a very dangerous virus and that there is NO remedy for it at this time.

Ok, if you can't tell, this thing is just RETARDED! I've seen expanded versions of this too, and I'll try to comment on some stuff I remember from it. To best explain this thing, I'll pick it apart into pieces for you:

Someone is sending out a very cute screensaver of the Budweiser Frogs.
Ok, I have this damn screen saver! I've had it for a long time. It's cool! It's not a virus!

If you download it, you will lose everything! Your hard drive will crash
Oh come on!! Fist off, any sane person would NOT download a file some complete stranger sent them. If they would, then they DESERVE a virus just for being dumb. Second, if your FRIEND sent it to you, then you need to kick their ass for sending you a virus. Third, it will not delete everything on your hard drive just by downloading it. You have to open, and I'm pretty sure you'll get errors popping up saying "Are you sure you wish to delete file.duh?", so you SHOULD know what's going on.

and someone from the Internet will get your screen name and password!
Now this right here tells you how moronic this thing is!! WHO from the Internet? The creator of the virus? If they made that part of the programing that info would be sent to them, then there'd be a way to look at the coding and finding his email addy, then contacting his ISP (the part after the @ symbol) and therefor tracking him down. Any hacker or virus creator wouldn't even think about putting a way to trace them into their illegal creations unless they TRULY want to be caught! Second, for them to get info, you'd have to still be online for it to send to them. If you weren't online, then nothing would get sent. And, for that info to be sent, it obviously would have to be sent BEFORE the deletion began. SO, when the virus runs, and it tries to send an email and you're not connected to the Internet, you'd most likly get an error message, something like "warning, could not send message..." or so. THAT's a pretty good way to know something's up. Just turn your computer off and restart in Safe Mode, and delete the files. Turning your computer off won't hurt anything, cuz the deletion hasn't had a chance to start yet.
Oh yeah, NONE of that is EVEN realivent, cuz your password isn't saved on your hard drive, it's saved on the server you connect to.
Also, what if a Mac user got this? IBM programs won't run on Macs.

It just went into circulation yesterday,
But how old is this letter?

Please distribute this message. and pass this along to EVERYONE in your address book so that this may be stopped.
RIGHT THERE tells you it's a friggin chain letter! I've even used the "send this to everyone in your address book!" line to spread crap!

This information was announced yesterday morning from Microsoft. and AOL has said that this is a very dangerous virus and that there is NO remedy for it at this time.
Now all they're doing here is dropping well-known names so it sounds real and "official". I've seen chain letters where they have "anouncments" from people like Amazon and Yahoo, and of course the above ones. Places that really have no reason to send out any type of an anouncment on a virus. That's what the NEWS is for! All it is is name dropping...!

Did you also notice the simplicity of this chain letter? If there was TRULY a "malicious" virus going around, there'd be a nice big DETAILED and PROFESSIONAL letter, not something that looks like a 13 year old wrote. But don't think now that all big professional-sounding letters are true either. I'm not the only tard that can see that simple letters like this ARE flaming-fake. People will write very detailed letters that they actually put some thought into to make it sounds real.

The bottom line is this: Don't frickin download something a complete stranger emails you! And quit sending letters like this out. By forwarding a letter like this to your friends, you're just insulting their intelligence cuz you obviously think they're too dumb to figure out the "Don't download from strangers" rule! By forwarding it on, you're simply doing what the creator of the chain letter was hoping for, and therefor encouraging him/her. If you want it to stop, quit sending them! If it's no fun to write chain letters because no one is stupid enough to pass it on, they won't even waste their time writing one up. THEN, maybe we can finally have a chain letter-free Internet!!

Also, did it dawn on anyone how idiotic it would be for a big company to spread the word on something as important as this through an illegal chain letter?
