A Stallion is a male horse that has not been castrated. Stallions can be
fertile as young as one year olds but are generally not used for breeding until
age two or three.
A Mare is a female
horse. When she is two or three years of age, she can be bred, but a young mare
of one year can become fertile, so it is not a good idea to have your youngsters
sharing accommodations with a stallion.
A Foal is a young horse
from birth to the time that they are weaned from their mothers.
A Filly is a female
horse under three years of age.
A Colt is a male horse
under three years of age.
A Weanling is a young
horse that has been separated, or weaned, from its mother (usually around 4
months of age).
A Gelding is a male
horse that has been castrated so that it cannot reproduce.
A Yearling
is a foal that has had it's first birthday.
A Sire
is the word used for the father of a horse.
A Dam
is the word used for the mother of a horse.
A Pony
is not a baby horse, nor is it a Miniature Horse. It is a Breed considerably
taller than the Minis.
The Miniature horse is a height
breed, measured in inches and must be under 34" at the withers. Other
horse breeds are measured in hands. One hand being equal to 4".
