How
to avoid to be lost in the Med.
Don't be surprised, it can happens!
Check in summer time on VHF channel 16!
Corso di Navigazione Astronomica
(CNA1).
(check the footnote also)
There are few solid rules to be put in place to avoid
yourself to be lost:
-
Compass, Log ant clock must be always efficient.
-
Write; always write when you leave the harbor the
hour, the direction and the speed you have.
-
Update each hour the above data's.
-
If you have an electronic log use the average function
for your calculation.
-
If you have a chronometer switch on it when you start. It
will be useful if you are lost to track a circumference from your starting
harbor to know the area where you can be.
-
If you enter in a storm try to fix in mind the average data
(time, direction and speed). This average data's will be better than nothing
when you have to write down on a map your path.
-
If you are lost in the night use your sense before ask for
an external help. Look for coast lights; big cities can be saw from more
than 100 miles. If you start from Ligury you should be able to identify
Genoa and Nice cities lights into the Corsica channel!
-
...and, if really you think to be lost you still have the
opportunity to learn how to know your position by the sextant. Please click
on my CNA1 (Corso di Navigazione Astronomica 1) and enjoy.

Last but not least.... if really you are going to leave the
spirit you can use a GPS!!! ... but don't forget to have a set of new batteries
onboard.
