Family Letter
published March 31, 2013 by Sunandar Adekusumo
This host family letter I dedicate to all my friends who want to learn and implement the exercise 6 on the IGCSE ESL, still remember it?
Dear American Family,
Three years time I’ve been waiting for this moment to write a letter to somebody whom I love in overseas. And this moment comes true because what you’re reading now is my first word to anyone out there. I’m so sorry for every possibility of my write is ordinary.
I am looking forward to staying with you and I want to tell you everything about me before we meet. First off, Sunandar Adekusumo is my full name and I’m a 16 year-old boy this coming October 25th. Standing up about 155cm, weighing about 44kg, having a black-ink retina, brown-box skin and sitting on the 11 graders in South Sumatera Senior High School or SMAN Sumsel (Sampoerna Academy) in native.
I come from a family of 6 plus 1: My father, Soderi (48), always guides and tells me to do not ask for help from others as long as I can still solve it. He works as a driver in a coal company and strives very hard to feed us. Fauziah (44) is my beloved mother who always cares, loves and teaches me about life. She likes to cook sticky rice for me and also helps our economical condition by educing to begin a small business, shop. I only have a sister, Ade Lestari (22), she’s older than me 6 years early and was married. Alan (22) is herhusband. He works as well as my father does. Syakirah (2) is her daughter and is a cute nephew for me. And the last is my lovely pet, Zorro (4), is a petty and vicious cat. She will never ever allow any other cats to get inside our house.
I love pets so much and so does my mom. She has hens and ducks behind the house, however I only have Zorro. Since I was born, I ever had pets like birds, rabbits, dog ( called ucok) and even a goat. Ucok wass my first and last dog, he’s a good boy but my mother didn’t allow me to have it.
I used to live in the small village in Indonesia - Gunung Megang. Gunung Megang was my place of born and my family now currently stay there, I am the only one who lived out of my hometown. The story began on the June 11th 2011, there was an announcement announcing to my junior high school principal that I got a scholarship from the Putra Sampoerna Foundation about US $15000 for three years study. I was very grateful to my God and I said “Alhamdulillah Ya Allah”, but by that I need to be 200 km away from my family.
Brave, truthful and excellent are my personality. I even ever called as the most brave student when I was the ten grader. I actually never assumed that myself is truthful and excellent, but my friends did. They told me that I’m so. However, sociable is my attitude. I could say that myself is very sociable because I will have an easy way to friend with new people in the new place.
“he’s on the Dallas street/your data input is probably missed”, “you, check the income again and make the recapitulation of this month!”, “how is the market share? who’s leading?”
Reading those parts of conversations would make you little bit confuse. But they were/are my ambitions.
The first one “he’s on the Dallas street/your data is probably missed” was symbolized my job as an IT or programmer or the one work with computer. The second one “you, check the income again and make the recapitulation of this month!” was my last ambition to become a manager of a big company or even the director. “how is the market share? who’s leading?” was describing me as a shares holder. The last that I didn’t mention is my newest dream and I will have my earnest to achieve it, an engineer. Yes, I want to be an engineer.
I know how it costs for the engineer faculty, but my school has a link to Sampoerna Foundation’s program which will help us in the economic side for a better education, it is Koperasi Siswa Bangsa. So, I will tell to my father “Dad, you don’t need to work as hard as before to pay for my education because I will pay my own”. What a great job which would done by a son to his father to say those simple words, and I am waiting for it.
In the free times I have, I usually play with my computer: playing my favorite games and movies – Harry Potter, browsing the internet, fixing the applications and sometimes making the projects given. If I have my bore time playing with the computer, of course I will find a friend to out looking for places we never come through, shopping, visiting the museums (I love visiting the museums, by that I could learn the past historical that I will never find in the future), culinary tour (it’s also thing I love), and many other precious things. Reading the novels and going to the library are also the alternative for me to fill my free times.
Talking about the novel, I still remember my first English novel – Twilight. The novel was in fully English and what do I like is that I cannot understand the meaning. I was laughing while reading the novel, but it was not a laugh because of the story but it was a laugh of mind “I don’t want to read this novel anymore”.
The reason why I want to go to America as an exchange student is because I want to gather valuable memories with a new family and get to know new friends. I would like to get to know the American way of life and different cultures. It would be great to improve my English skills and become more independent, self-confident and open-minded by spending an exciting year abroad. Primarily it´s of course the time I´m going to spend with the children and the experience of an eventful year with you and your kids. And last want to make my parents become more proud of me.
I would be happy to have the opportunity to speak with you: to learn more about your family; to answer whatever questions you may have about me, my family, my school, my culture and my Indonesia.
I am looking for a host family who is open-minded, lovely and funny. I do not just want to be a caregiver, I want to be a part of your family.
In conclusion, I would like to thank you very much for taking your time to get to know me better. I am really excited to be your child and spent a wonderful and unforgettable year with you and your family.
Sincerely Yours,
Sunandar
