Parking Brake, Adjust

Remove

Set parking brake lever to 3rd notch. Remove exhaust system heat shields (2) from vehicle underbody.
Release fastening nut (1) on parking brake cable compensation yoke.

Remove rear wheels.

Adjust

Turn pinion of the adjusting unit to the left and right until the rear wheel brake begins to block.

Turn back pinion of drum brake adjusting units until the rear wheel brake can just be turned freely (without
drum brake lining friction).

Note: If the rear wheel brake blocks when turning the brake drum, possible tilting of the brake linings in the
brake drum can be prevented by briefly pulling (arrow) the parking brake cable of the relevant wheel brake.

Install

Mount rear wheels ¡V tightening torque 110 Nm / 81 lbf. ft.

Tighten fastening nut (1) on parking brake cable compensation yoke until the braking effect just sets in at the
rear wheels. The braking effect must be equal on both rear wheels.

The rear wheels must still turn with a slight braking effect when the 3rd notch of the parking brake lever is
engaged and block at the 7th notch.

Replace parking brake shoes.

Note: Always replace all brake shoes of parking brake.

Remove

Release parking brake. Remove rear wheels.

For vehicles with V6 engine: Remove exhaust system.

Remove heat shields. Release adjustment nut (1) on parking brake cable compensation yoke.

Remove brake disc (2) of rear wheel brake ¡V see operation "Brake Disc- Rear Wheel Brake, Remove and
Install or Replace".

Detach return spring (4) and parking brake cable (3) from brake cable lever.

Detach upper brake shoe return spring with brake spring pliers.

Detach lower brake shoe return spring (5) using brake spring pliers (1). Remove both brake shoe return
springs.

Remove adjusting unit (4).

Remove both retaining pins (2) using KM-985 (3) or screwdriver and remove parking brake shoes from
brake carrier.

Clean

Clean all removed parts.

Inspect

Check removed parts for wear. Replace brake shoes and any damaged parts. Check brake cable lever for
free movement, remove if necessary, free and lubricate.

Install

Thinly coat adjusting screw (1) with grease and screw in completely.

Attach one brake shoe with retaining pin (3) use KM-985 (4) or screwdriver.

If removed: Insert brake cable lever (2).

Attach second brake shoe with retaining pin ¡V use KM-985 or screwdriver.

Attach lower brake shoe return spring using brake spring pliers (5). Screw adjusting unit together completely,
insert and install upper brake shoe return spring using brake spring pliers.

Clean

Clean contact surfaces between brake disc and rear wheel hub.

Install

Install brake disc (1) for rear wheel brake ¡V see operation "Brake Disc- Rear Wheel Brake, Remove and Install
or Replace".

Attach parking brake cable (2) to brake cable lever and install return spring (3).

Adjust parking brake ¡V see operation "Parking Brake, Adjust".

Mount rear wheels ¡V tightening torque 110 Nm / 81 lbf. ft.
