Youth Ministry Committee, Meeting Minutes

September 12, 2006

Present:  Chris, Jay, Lisa, Nathan, Susan

ACT II:  The flyer for this conference shows only one event for youth, on Saturday, 9/30, from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm.  The cost is only $10/group.  Nathan will find out if there are any other youth events at Act II, and then he will send a postcard to youth with the details.  Chris will reserve a van.  Adults who have agreed to sponsor the trip are Karen Raabe, Diane Forester, and Nathan Fuhrman.

OCTOBER COMMITTEE NIGHT DINNER:  Youth Ministry will provide pizza from J&J’s at the next committee night.  Susan will coordinate.  So far, $55 has been collected from Chris, Lisa, Helen, Jay, Nathan, and Susan.  Other committee members: please give $10 to Susan before 10/10.

YOUTH CALENDAR: A few events have been shifted.  Please see http://geocities.com/sukiepeanut/ for the latest calendar.  Nathan will create a link to this webpage from the Saint Andrew main webpage.  Since the calendar is filling up, the Scavenger Hunt will probably be postponed until spring.

CHILI COOKOFF:  We decided to go ahead with the Chili Cook-off Fundraiser, contingent upon Fellowship Hall being available after worship on Sunday, 11/12.  Nathan will confirm the date on church calendar, and then Chris will ask Jonathan and Doug/James to get youth groups to begin advertising with posters.  One of the posters will include a list for individuals and teams to sign-up to participate in the cook-off contest.  Youth will be asked to bring Fritos, cheese, cornbread, desserts, etc.  The remaining details will be worked out at the October meeting.

SKI TRIP:  Since the school district calendars for schools where youth attend vary widely on the dates for Christmas Break, we decided that the only dates for a ski trip which would not exclude anyone would be between Christmas and New Years.  Lisa will ask Bev Noah if she can work out some kind of all-inclusive ski trip which includes travel on 12/26, skiing on 12/27 – 12/29, and a return late on 12/30.  Although Spring Break is another possibility, youth who attend Argyle schools would be excluded.

BUDGET:  Lisa Patterson has asked Youth Ministry to submit a budget request this month.  Youth Ministry has several spending categories within the Christian Education budget.  Last year, these amounts were budgeted for Youth Ministry:

Fellowship - $3,500

Conferences - $1,700

Retreats - $2,500

Mission Trips - $3,600

Lunch Ministry - $750

The Mission Committee also contributes to Mission Trips for youth.  At the meeting, the previous year’s expenditures were not available; Nathan agreed to provide these to us in a separate email message.  It is believed that ~$3,000 remains within the Mission Trips “line” from last year.  Chris will ask that any remaining youth funds be carried into the coming year for use by new Associate Pastor.

NEW BUSINESS:  Nathan presented an opportunity for our Youth Music program – First Presbyterian of Richardson is planning a trip to various locations in Tennessee this summer, 6/2 through 6/10.  The trip will include worship, performances, mission work, white water rafting, and other wonderful activities.  Our youth choir could learn the music and join First-Richardson youth on their trip.  Nathan asked if Youth Ministry agreed that this opportunity was worth further exploration.  The answer was a definite “yes.”  Nathan will present the opportunity to additional Saint Andrew committees, and get more information from First-Richardson.

MISC:  Members praised the “Youth Corner” in The Shield.  The upcoming Shield publication deadlines are 9/22, 10/6, and 10/20.

Please send any email addresses for youth (or their parents) to Susan.  She’ll compile a master list.
