Youth Ministry Committee, Meeting Minutes

April 10, 2007

Present:  John Cartwright, Shandi Davis, Joel Hays, Kari Laehr, Brandon Lewis, Susan Pierce, Lisa Rosenberg, Kayla Swenson, Helen Welborn

YMC welcomed new members Shandi Davis and Kari Laehr.

YOUTH SUNDAY:  A rehearsal has been set for Saturday, April 21 at 8:00 a.m.  Brandon reports that everything is lined up for this worship service.

SENIOR DINNER:  Shannon Drawe has agreed to produce the “photo show.”  Brandon will ensure that an announcement is included in the worship bulletin, reminding parents of seniors to send 10 photos of their youth to the church office as soon as possible.  There was a mis-communication about the meal, whether it would be provided by Liz or by junior parents.  Joel will talk to Liz, Karen Raabe, and Jay Thomas to make sure that we are all on the same page.  Liz will provide the meal, and parents of juniors and YMC members will be asked to provide desserts and help serve.  Brandon will include an announcement in the worship bulletin encouraging everyone to attend the “church-wide” Senior Dinner, with an RSVP sign-up (due April 29) included in the Ritual of Friendship books.  Kari related her own Senior Dinner experience, which was especially meaningful when other church members stood up and spoke about each graduating senior.  She also related the joy of receiving letters and care packages from her church as she went to college.

SENIOR HIGH BACKPACKING TRIP:  Brandon will send postcards announcing the dates for this trip:  July 21 through 27.  There will be room for 13 people, including leaders/sponsors.  A guide familiar with the Weimenuche Wilderness has been hired to lead the group.

MIDDLE SCHOOL LOCK-IN:  The event was a success, with 32 middle schoolers attending.  Sponsors included Mark Glasshroeder, John Cartwright, and Brandy Lynn, as well as Kari and Brandon.  This year, the 30-Hour Famine was not included since there was not enough time to give it the proper emphasis.  Next year, the lock-in will be scheduled to occur after Holy Week.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER TRIP:  A fun trip for middle schoolers has been finalized for June 14 through 18.  Coordinated by Compass Wilderness, at least ten of our youth will have opportunities to hike, raft, and rappel in Durango, Colorado.  We may need to rent a van for transportation, since church vans may be needed for the Mo Ranch and college trips which include some of the same travel dates.  Brandon will send postcards announcing this trip.  The cost will be about $265 for food and lodging (condos).

SENIOR HIGH MISSION TRIP:  A mission trip to Boston, coordinated by YouthWorks, was announced in the worship bulletin on Easter Sunday.  The trip is scheduled for June 30 through July 8.  Brandon related good impressions of YouthWorks, an organization that has coordinated affordable mission opportunities for 14 years at 77 different sites.  They estimate that 37,000 people will participate in their programs just this summer.  Youth still stay at a Baptist church in Lynn (suburb of Boston) between July 1 and 7 while participating daily in various mission programs.  In the evenings, they will tour Boston and go to the beach.  The last days of the trip will provide additional tourist outings.  Bev Noah is working on air travel arrangements.  There are 16 spots available for youth and sponsors; we may be able to work with other participating churches if more spots are needed.  Estimated costs include $300/person for airfare, $200/person for YouthWorks (includes food/lodging), plus additional amounts for van rental and the final days’ lodging/food.  Hopefully, the cost to each participant can be kept at or below $500.  This is made possible in part by extra funds available to YM budget:  $1,200 refunded from the ski trip, and $3,000 remaining from the Hollywood mission trip.  YMC agreed to commit $1,200 plus $1,500 of these funds to the Boston mission trip.

YM BUDGET:  Not including the extra funds mentioned above, the YM budget balances are:

            Fellowship      $2,855

            Conferences  $1,192

            Retreats         $1,892

            Mission           $3,125

FUNDRAISING:  A “Mission Meat Fest” is planned for Sunday, May 20, after worship.
