Youth Ministry Committee, Meeting Minutes

March 13, 2007

Present:  Megan Brooks, Joel Hays, Brandon Lewis, Susan Pierce

YOUTH SUNDAY:  Brandon has notes from previous years.  Karen Raabe has volunteered to help coordinate ushers from Middle School youth.  Susan will help.

SENIOR DINNER:  Gary Klingemann will be unable to produce the “photo show.”  Brandon will ask Shannon Drawe or Jonathan Fite.  We are counting on Nathan to scan the photos again into image files.  Karen is making a list of parents of juniors – we will call and ask them to assist Liz with the preparation of the dinner.  Barbequed chicken was chosen for the main course.  Joel will ask Alan Brown to emcee again this year since he has known most of the seniors for many years.  Susan will ask Lisa and Marla to help decorate.

CRUCIFER SIGN-UP:  Only one senior high youth signed up, so Brandon will ask middle school youth to volunteer.

CONFIRMAND RECEPTION:  Stacy Hays has volunteered to help coordinate.  Joel will ask Kayla as well.  Susan will send an email asking all YMC members to bring two dozen cookies before the second service on April 1.

YOUTH MISSION PLANNING:  YouthWorks might be able to provide an ideal mission opportunity for our middle school youth this summer.  Since we are not familiar with their operation, Joel and Brandon will ask other youth leaders for references.  YouthWorks charges $250 per person to support (food, lodging, etc.) a mission in Colorado.  An additional amount would be needed for transportation, and about $100 per day per person for one or two recreation days at the end of the trip.  Joel has looked into the possibility of white water rafting near Grand Junction.  Possible trip dates are June 17 – 22.  Susan stressed that any plans for this summer be finalized as soon as possible so that dates for mission trips and family vacations would not conflict.

Brandon is waiting for a response from the mission coordinator in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, in regard to possible open dates this summer for a senior high or inter-generational mission trip.

Group rate transportation for an international mission trip, to El Salvador for example, would cost about $500-$600 per person (assuming 12-15 people), with a total cost estimated at $1500 per person.  Brandon will learn more about the Agros application process/timeline.

In general, Joel estimates that the Youth Ministry budget will need to double next year (and increase by another 50% the following year) to support a yearly local mission trips for middle school and alternating national and international mission trips for senior high youth.  Brandon and Joel will meet with the Mission Committee in April and with the Session in May to share ideas and goals for youth mission work.

BACKPACKING TRIP:  The backpacking trip has been rescheduled for July 21 – 27.  Hopefully these dates will interfere less with school activities starting in August.
