Youth Ministry Committee, Meeting Minutes

October 10, 2006

Present:  Chris Howell, Nathan Fuhrman, Susan Pierce, Lisa Rosenberg, Kayla Swenson, Helen Welborn

The Youth Ministry Committee provided pizza for all people attending committee meetings tonight.

YOUTHQUAKE: The only open dates for Fall Youthquake are either October 27-29 or November 3-5.  Both of these sessions will be held at Camp Prairie Valley, which is west of Hillsboro.  This Youthquake is planned for senior high youth.  The church vans are available during the November dates, and the committee thought that weekend would have fewer conflicts for most youth.  These dates will be mentioned in upcoming Sunday School class and Fellowship meetings, and Nathan will email senior high parents with information about the Youthquake event.  Helen would like to go as a Youthquake sponsor.

SKI TRIP:  As Chris outlined in his email sent prior to this meeting, the Ski Trip has been finalized, and Lisa Patterson has sent a postcard to all youth with the following information:

SAPC Ski Trip 2006, Breckenridge, Colorado.  We will have to the Great Divide Lodge by charter bus at 9 pm on December 29 and return by chartered bus on January 3 in the afternoon.  Skier price is $450 and snowboarder price is $500.  A full brochure will be coming out next week, but we wanted you to mark your calendars today.  If you have any questions, contact Lisa Patterson at 940-387-3897 or [email protected].

Leftover funds in the youth budget will be used to pay for the chartered bus.  Youth are encouraged to invite friends.  A meeting will be held after church to collect sizes, medical information, etc – Lisa will set the date.  Youth must participate in at least one service activity to be eligible to go on the trip.  Service activities include helping with Vacation Bible School, summer lunch program, and At Your Service Day.  Each service activity will credit $25 toward the participants’ amount due; the maximum service credit is $50/participant.  Nathan will organize a spreadsheet to keep track of individual credits and payments.

Much discussion centered on improvements needed, such as:

- Covenant of Conduct signed by all participants.

- All youth stay at ski area until the end of the day.  Youth will not be allowed to return early to their rooms.

- Sponsors who are not skiing will be available each day.

- No sick persons will be allowed on the bus on December 29.

- Separate meeting held for all sponsors.

- One adult sponsor will stay in each room.

AT YOUR SERVICE DAY:  Scheduled for November 18.  Adult volunteers are Chris, Helen, Lisa R., Susan, Nathan, and possibly Jay and Marla.  Teams of 3-4 youth will be organized, along with tasks and maps, by Nathan.

FOOD BANK TRICK OR TREAT:  Scheduled for October 29, from 4pm to 6pm, with Youth Choir meeting at 3:30 pm.  Donated food will be given to the Denton Community Food Bank.  Both Middle and Senior High Youth Groups are invited to participate.  Jonathan and Nathan will drive the church vans.  Nathan will make nametags for youth to assure donors that the food drive is “official.”

GOODLAND BOYS and TREEHOUSE GIFTS:  Chris has been assured by Goodland leaders that wish lists are being compiled.  Karen will coordinate the youth in setting up of the tree (senior high) and creation of ornament-wishlists (middle school).  All needs to be complete by November 12 to allow enough time for gift purchases.

CONCESSIONS FUND-RAISING:  Helen will call UNT concessions coordinator to schedule possible participation by teams of youth and adults.  Pay is $6/hour/person, and the work is usually fun for everyone.  Available dates include UNT basketball games and cheerleader conferences.

The next meeting will be on 11/14/2006.  At that time, hopefully, a new Youth Ministry Committee moderator will be elected to take over for Chris on 1/1/2007.
