Youth Ministry Committee, Meeting Minutes

January 9, 2007

Present:  John Cartwright, Marla Cartwright, Nathan Fuhrman, Joel Hays, Brandon Lewis, Susan Pierce, Karen Raabe, Kayla Swenson

COMMITTEE NIGHT MEAL:  Youth Ministry Committee will provide the Tuesday Committee Night meal in June 2007.

TRIENNIUM:  A designated number of slots will be set aside for each presbytery.  James Byers is involved in the planning of this year’s event, which will be held at Purdue in July.  Approximately 7,000 people will attend.  YMC needs to select a sophomore or junior to attend and bring back some of the leadership and energy from the conference.  Applications were mailed to all senior high youth.  Completed applications, returned by Aubri Thomas and Walker Patterson, were reviewed.  Based on age, YMC will recommend that Aubri be selected.  Hopefully Walker, as first alternate, will also get to attend.  The session will make the final decision.

SENIOR HIGH YOUTH CONNECTION:  “Shy-See” is January 26 (Friday night) until January 28 (Sunday) at Austin College for senior high youth.  The application deadline is 1/15.  YMC will pay for lodging and registration.  Fort Worth Presbyterian has offered to share transportation with us.  At least six of our youth have expressed an interest in attending, and Brandon will call all who are interested.  The conference will be mentioned again in Sunday School.  Karen will ask Diane Forester to go as a sponsor.  Nathan will also go.

SKI TRIP:  Due to a blizzard, our ski trip group did not make it past Dumas, Texas.  First Baptist allowed our youth to sleep in their carpeted gym, and served a pancake breakfast the next morning.  Then our group returned home late that day.  Lisa Patterson is continuing to negotiate for some type of refund or rescheduling of the ski trip.  She sent postcards to all involved with the details.  YMC was asked to gauge interest in a spring break ski trip.  Kayla suggested that we consider travel by air instead of bus.  Nathan will ask Bev Noah to explore a few options.  Joel will discuss further with Lisa.

OTHER DATES FOR SPRING:

  • YOUTH SUNDAY will be scheduled later in the spring to allow Brandon more time to get to know youth.  Since the college group is scheduled to lead worship of April 29, Youth Sunday could be set for April 15.
  • 30-HOUR FAMINE AND LOCK-IN is usually scheduled on Good Friday, which is April 6 this year.
  • SENIOR DINNER is usually scheduled for the first Sunday in May, which falls on May 6 this year.  Susan asked that be better promote this event to show more church-wide support of our graduating seniors.

CRUCIFER SIGNUP:  A sign-up list will be circulated in Sunday School to recruit 10th graders as crucifers.  They carry the cross during the procession before and after the 10:50 am worship service.

BRANDON’S COMMENTS:  Brandon talked to about 35 youth in Sunday School and 16 youth at Sunday evening fellowship.  He asked about their needs and desires.  Discussion included general Biblical knowledge, WhirlyBall, the 30-Hour Famine, and mission trips.

COMMITTEE PLANNING:  Joel asked that the February YMC meeting include a discussion for strategic planning for youth, focusing on the church-wide planning themes of education, fellowship, mission, etc.  He described a website for a Chicago church that has a structured 6-year mission program for their youth.

YMC MEMBERSHIP:  Joel asked if YMC membership should include a senior high youth member.  YMC agreed that this would be great, and the senior high group would be asked each semester to nominate one of their peers to attend meetings.
