Music of the 1960's
The decade of change

Possibly spurred on by the emergence of Rock and Roll in the 1950's, the 1960's, for better or worse, was a decade of societal change. From calmer, but far·reaching events - the peace protest in 1963, led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Washington D.C., and sweeping Civil Rights legislation enacted by the U.S. Government in 1964 - to more violent acts such as key assassinations - President John F. Kennedy in 1963, his brother, Sen. Robert Kennedy in 1968, and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. the same year - and racial riots in several U.S. cities in 1967 and 1968. By the middle of the decade, these changes were reflected in popular music and its lyrics. Re·live the number one songs from decade of change by selecting a year below.
