Phoenix Bishop Kills Pedestrian Feb 19, 2004 Not only did Bishop Thomas O'Brien of Phoenix mishandle complaints about priests in his parish sexually abusing minors, now he is outright killing people, by running them over with his car, and fleeing the scene of the crime. On his way home from mass on June 14, 2003, Thomas O'Brien killed pedestrian Jim Reed, age 43, as he was crossing the street. He then drove two miles to his house and parked the Buick in his garage. O'Brien led the Phoenix diocese's of nearly 480,000 Catholics for 21 years until he stepped down in June after he was charged in the crash. The bishop could face probation to 45 months in prison.
