Raking hay

Stoney Creek and Captain’s Flat putting out a fire in a hayshed.

A local farmer’s supply of recently cut hay for the coming winter was still a bit green. Just like a compost heap, it began to warm up and reached a point where it started to burn.

This fire in our area took place in January 2004. It took more than 1000 man-hours over a week of active fire-fighting and patrolling. The crews faced days of high and extreme fire danger, temperatures of around 40 degrees C and gusty north-westerly winds.

We were assisted by Captains Flat, Hoskingtown and Queanbeyan brigades. At its peak, there were three Category 1 and three Cat 7 tankers and the Quickfill at the fire.

Our thanks to the property owner for his support during and after the incident.

Inside the shed

A few days later, we we can see the damage the fire has done to the steel holding up the frame. The Fire is still burning under the charred bales.
