Aborted alive
Jill L.Stanek, RN.
April 28, 2001
Oak Lawn -- I am writing in response to "Compassionate care" (Voice of
the people, April 14) from Rev. Larry Easterling. The topic under
discussion is a type of abortion procedure performed at Christ Hospital that often
results in babies being aborted alive. I am a registered nurse who has worked in
the Labor & Delivery Department at Christ Hospital for the past 5 1/2
years.
Concern over the welfare of live aborted babies is precisely why State
Sen. Patrick O'Malley (R-Palos Park), who resigned from the governing
council of Christ Hospital because of its abortion policy, recently introduced a
package of three "born-alive" bills into the Illinois General Assembly. Passage
of these bills into law will ensure that all babies, even those born alive
via abortion, will receive equal protection regarding medical assessments
and care after delivery.
Rev. Easterling implies that the only babies aborted by means of
induced labor at Christ Hospital are those who are fatally ill. This is
inaccurate. Advocate's Pregnancy Termination Fact Sheet dated June 2000 states that
the company will also abort for life or health of the mother, rape, incest
or "selective reduction" in cases of multiple gestation. It is thus clear
that no exception is made to protect healthy babies from abortion at Christ
Hospital. Rev. Easterling and Christ Hospital are proud to "affirm that
human life is always sacred." Yet Christ Hospital offers parents the option
to abort for eugenic purposes. Then, Christ Hospital says it may
solicitously jump in and attempt to save the life of a baby it has just aborted,
even though the reason the baby's life is in great peril may very well be
because she or he was just aborted!
