Prayer Vigil to be held at Advocate Christ Hospital on Sunday, December 9th

OAK LAWN, ILLINOIS December 6, 2001 (RFM NEWS) On Sunday, December 9th at 2:30 PM, an interfaith prayer vigil organized by Our Lady of Guadalupe's Helpers for Life and Advocates Against Abortion at Christ Hospital will be held at Advocate Christ Hospital located near the corner of 95th & Kostner in Oak Lawn, Illinois.  The prayer vigil is part of a continuing series of events meant to bring attention to an abortion procedure being used at the medical facility owned by Advocate Health Care Systems, headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois.

Previous prayer vigils have been peaceful, with the first event being held nearly two years ago.  Advocate Christ Hospital first came under criticism when Jill Stanek, who was at the time employed as a labor and delivery nurse at the facility, brought national attention to the implementation of an abortion procedure that some are calling live-birth abortion.  Stanek, who has since been fired by Advocate Christ Hospital, is now running for political office as she seeks the Republican nomination for the Illinois House of Representatives in the 81st district, a seat currently held by Republican Renee Kosel who is seeking another term in Springfield.

Kosel played a significant role in the Advocate Christ Hospital controversy when she testified before the Illinois House Judiciary Committee against a piece of legislation (Born-Alive Infants Protection Bills--SB1093, 1094 & 1095) that would have monitored the abortion method in question.  Kosel, a member of Advocate Christ Hospital's Governing Council, has come under heavy fire in her district concerning her role in the defeat of a series of bills sponsored by state Senator and gubernatorial candidate Patrick O'Malley (R-18, Palos Park).

A number of politicians have attended past prayer vigils, including O'Malley and state Senator Chris Lauzen (R-21, Aurora).  The prayer vigils held at Christ Hospital were a precursor to a national movement meant to outlaw what the hospital calls the induced labor method which, at times, results in the birth of a live baby who is then left to die without medical intervention in order to complete the abortion.  A number of elected officials and community leaders have called the practice infanticide.
