National Life Chain to revisit Oak Lawn hospital

OAK LAWN, ILLINOIS, October 4, 2001 (RFM NEWS) On Sunday, October 7th, there will be a Life Chain held at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois.  Life Chain is a national annual event where those who support the pro-life cause gather around the country to link hands and pray for an end to abortion.  This is the second year pro-lifers will target the Oak Lawn facility which is at the center of a national controversy over a procedure called live-birth abortion.

In 2000 an estimated crowd of over 1,200 people encircled the Oak Lawn hospital.  Among those attending last year's event was labor and delivery nurse, Jill Stanek, who first brought national attention to Christ Hospital's use of the controversial induced labor abortion method, which sometimes results in the birth of a live baby, who is then allowed to die, in order to complete the abortion procedure.  Stanek was recently fired by Advocate Christ Hospital.  Advocate Health Care Systems, which controls Christ Hospital and eight other hospitals in the Chicagoland area, did not give cause for Stanek's termination.  The labor and delivery nurse has given testimony in front of the Illinois General Assembly and the United States Congress concerning legislation that would protect newborns who survived such abortion methods.

"It's a public, peaceful witness to life in our country.  And this year we are adding patriotism to it, to stand united to the tragedy our nation suffered on Sept. 11th," said Nancy Czerwiec, of the Human Life Resource Center and a Life Chain coordinator.  "We are standing for life, liberty and the blessings God has given to us in our nation."  The Life Chain event originated in the mid 1980s.  Similar demonstrations will be held at other sites across the country.

Sunday's Life Chain will begin at 2:30 and end at 3:30.  Event organizers are asking participants to wear red, white and blue clothing and to bring an American flag to acknowledge those who lost their lives, due to the terrorist attacks launched on America on September 11th.
