Tuesday : Bangsar walk back, Dr Bandirs House and Malaysia Nature Society www.mns.org.my

Wed - internet work - walking
Thu - I went for an interview .. I'd rather hold out for something better and more interesting
Fri- dentist and walking around the park upto the old Carcosa Palace (now restaurant)

Saturday : Met up with HC members for a lot of talking.
the MPH bookreading was not so good..a lot of sex and swearing for Saturday afternoon shopping centre

Sun - Decided the city was too polluted so decided to get out and took the train to Klang ..bit of a waste of time cos it was so rainey. On the way back I made the mistake of going to see the Shah Alam carnival, rain traffic jam, crowds and mud.
Mon - Interesting meetings
Tues- internet .. then to see the YTL Comedy night..OK (to see the Malaysian culture) not brilliant

3F Comedy for YTL Corps 50th birthday. KLPAC Professional, but not so funny. Malaysia’s funniest comedians, namely Harith Iskander, Jit Murad and Afdlin Shauki

I went up to Sentul a northen suburb where an old barracks is being turned into a luxury park housing estate by YTL. 3 comedians did stand up and then talked together. Interesting to see Malaysian cultural aspects each used parts of 3 languages, but I think this diluted the comedy. Some material was OK, but nothing brilliant. One piece was saying how more difficult it is for comedians compared to singers. You don't go to a Madonna concert and say "I've heard that song before, sing us a new one.", Firstly that shows how more talented comedians are than singers, and actually if you do write "great comedy", like Monty Pythons : Dead Parrot or the 3 Yorkshiremen then people will pay to see it again.

They were much better than modern UK comedians who don't know any jokes, but 2 of Jit's were recycled schoolboy jokes. Stories about traditional Malaysian sports or Malay attitudes towards making babies, or immigration officers were interesting, but not really funny.

Unlike the police state of Singapore there was surprising little evidence of self censorship , politicians were named and criticised, no-one had a problem about Jit talking about being gay. But overall it was pretty like, not cutting like Ben Elton.

Adlin.. Good one about fat "I have chosen to be different, not a conformist like you all", "I can be sure my wife loves me for my personality."
some sound files on my CSI Malaysia, other clip

The musicians were good, but I don't see why they had sexy dancers.

It was OK for free I learnt more about Malaysian culture, but there wasn't much of that really makes you think stuff.

Those big companies make so much money ..lah!

Malaysia is full of pirated DVDs, people don't think theirs anything wrong at all ..well that's OK. Does that mean it's OK to steal from rich people ?
Ironically most people are spending more on DVDs than people in the UK, cos people rent movies for 50c in the UK (and then maybe copy them) and in Malaysians spend more money cos they buy. They both spend more than me cos I've never bought or rented a DVD.

How to get payment from things that can be pirated ?
You pay to watch a movie, but you don't pay to watch the sunset.
1. Give for free and ask for donations 2. Get sponsorship, patron 3. Carry advertising 4. Carries software allowing you to buy a particular service e.g. Catalogue
Artist can get money from listener, advertiser, government health campaign , antigangster propaganda

The more it's pirated the wider the message, so use the piracy as advertising to make money from merchandising etc.

True : Once you've sold up to break even all is profit. So I can understand people saying ...these people make so much money lah !, except that it's not always true ... Apart from tne initial makIng costs ..paying writers, actors, technicians etc They have huge advertising and marketing costs ... Some movie companies have gone bancrupt like MAS so you are not stealing from the rich.

Ironically the smaller countries are stealing from their own culture as they end up spending money on American pirated stuff and never put in any money into the local movie industry.
