 Unit 17 Website Development

Scenario
You have been employed by Thames College as a website developer. As part of your training you have been asked to undertake a number of tasks. Once you have completed these tasks you will then be able to develop the school website. All of these tasks will be monitored by the tutors and the Course Coordinator for the computing department.

Tasks 1 [P1 & P2]

  1. Identify the hardware and software components which enable internet and web functionality. List the components in a table with images and specification.
  2. Describe the following: ISP, web hosting, domain structure, domain name registrars worldwide web, blogs and online applications

Tasks 2 [P3]

Explain the uses of websites from different categories stating the purpose of websites. Note whether they have achieved their specific purpose.  Include images of each website. See table – see Blackboard VLE).


Task 3 [P4, P5, P6,P7, M3]

Now that you have successfully completed the above tasks, you have been asked to improve the college’s website by developing a site for the Business & Computing school. The website must cover all the units taught on the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT, an introduction with an overview of the course and the teaching team. The website must have the college logo on each page. (information can be found on blackboard VLE)

  1. Design – should include a storyboard which shows the layout of each page outlining each unit of the course.  (use template see Blackboard) (P4)
  2. Use a template design so that all the web pages have the same design (P5)
  3. Create – Use Dreamweaver to create the WebPages based on the storyboard layout. (P5) (M3)
  4. Upload the website to https://geocities.ws (P6)
  5. Ensure all hyperlinks work to each webpage and that all images are visible. Tutor to complete observation form) (P7)

 

 

 

Task 4 [M1]

Explain how you have used different construction features to help the users access information on your website created for task 3. For example the navigation on your website using the various buttons/images etc.,


Tasks 5 [M2]

Describe how the designers have used interactive techniques on 2 websites and what technique can be used to provide interactivity. Use 1 data input form online that is linked to a database e.g. new email account and an online assessment that records results.  Use screen prints as evidence and annotate.


Tasks 5 [M4]

Review 2 websites identify and explain suggestions and improvements – Peers review each others website created in task 3 and 1 other website. (complete the form see blackboard) Make the necessary changes based on the feedback to your own website. Examples of feedback to colour choose, font size and the combination of colours, graphics used are not blurred etc.,
