Scenario
A vacancy has arisen for a Trainee System Support Engineer in a company that supplies Computer parts to smaller companies. You have been short listed for an interview.
Prior to your interview the manager sends you the following list of interview tasks to prepare. These will be used to find out your knowledge level in supporting end users.
Task 1 – Why Install?
A large portion of your duties as a Trainee Technician would be installing new parts in the customers’ existing systems.

- Describe the reasons for and implications of installing hardware components. The following areas need to be included:
- Reasons: Routine maintenance, Fault repair, Upgrade
- Implications: Training, Compatibility, Decommissioning, Service level agreements
- Upgrade: User requirements, increased capacity, increased speed, increased reliability, software requirements
Evidence can be written work, a presentation, or a poster. (P1)
Understanding the risks involved and precautions needed when installing hardware components is a major concern when employing new and junior technicians. The manager is anxious to avoid any incidents in the workplace or whilst working offsite.
- You have been asked to produce a short report that lists and explains potential risks to consider when installing hardware components. The report should cover:
- Risks to systems: Electrostatic discharge, equipment damage, risk to data e.g data loss, data corruption, service loss, damage to components

1.2 Several different options are often available when installing hardware; your report should now consider the pros and cons of these by discussing the precautions that can be taken to avoid problems
Precautions: Checking health and safety regulations, antistatic equipment, use of appropriate tools, backup data

Task 2 – Groundwork
At the interview you will asked to install or upgrade hardware components safely.
- Describe the steps that should be carried out before any installation of one of the following:
- Motherboard
- Peripherals
