Tobacco Education Programs

  • Illinois Smoke-Free Restaurant Recognition Program was designed to identify and recognize those restaurants in the county that have made the decision to be a smoke-free.  This program, over time, may serve to educate the public about the dangers of second-hand smoke, and correct the perception that restaurant owners would lose money.  Last year, 3 restaurants in the county were identified and recognized for being smoke-free.  This program is ongoing as more and more restaurants made the choice to become smoke-free.
  • Make Yours A Fresh Start Family is a program that is targeted towards pregnant, postpartum, lactating W.I.C. and Family Case Management Clients, and Family Planning Program Clients.  The program's objectives are to increase smoking cessation attempts by adult smokers, and increase smoking cessation during pregnancy.
  • Not On Tobacco (NOT) Program was chosen because it addresses tobacco use as a modifiable risk factor for Cardiovascular Disease.  Decreasing the use of Tobacco by teens will also have an effect on seven other leading causes of mortality, including cancer.  There are many teens in Wayne County who have been smoking for several years, and among those teens, a percentage may be receptive to quitting.  Early initiation of smoking in Wayne County is seen in the grade school population.  The program will target student in grades 9-12.  For the first year, we will be targeting on high school in Wayne County, as will add other schools if this program is successful.
  • The "Smoke Free -- That's Me" program is an educational, smoking prevention program designed for 2nd, 4th, and 6th grade students. The program is a 50-minute presentation that consists of discussions on lung health, peer pressure, advertising, and various other issues related to the hazards of using tobacco products.
  • Project TNT (Towards No Tobacco Use) is a program geared to reduce the initiation of tobacco use among children and adolescents, and to increase the average age of first use of tobacco products by adolescents and young adults.  The program will be targeting 7th and 8th grade students.
  • Freedom From Smoking® Group Clinic Program is an 8-session group program led by experts who understand why you smoke. The program uses a positive behavior-change approach that teaches you how to become a nonsmoker for good. You'll get special attention in developing your own quitting plan, dealing with recovery symptoms, controlling weight, managing stress through relaxation techniques that work, and being ready to fight those urges to go back to smoking. For many smokers, especially those who have tried to quit before, group support can make the difference in helping to stay smoke-free.
