Personal History:

James has hearing that is near Vulcan in precision. There is no family history that explains this trait. James also has a measured IQ of 185. This accounts for his rapid rise through the academic ranks.

James also has a deep fear of sickbay, particularly if anyone close to him is under medical care. His mother was killed when she was attacked by a mentally unstable patient. All four of his grandparents were killed during different freakish industrial accidents and James was present in the hospital when all of his grandparents died. He was the only family present when his maternal grandmother passed away from an explosion caused by a plasma discharge. He becomes very agitated when in any sick bay and even his mastery of martial arts relaxation techniques is only a partial solution.

The investigations into the deaths of his grandparents revealed a safety or procedural violation of one form or another. This has led to James being very particular concerning safety in his department. On the other hand, James is always questioning standard procedure if there is not a good reason for the procedure. This apparent conflict is easily explained by James' mantra at the end of every department briefing. "You must not only know what you are doing, but also know *why* you are doing what you are doing."
