When she was 10 she stumbled upon a box of old photo albums in the basement of her family's old house in the Hudson Valley. This was a very strange discovery for a young girl growing up in a time when the only photo-archives were holographic or on computers. Her ever-present curiosity prompted her to leaf through the dusty pages... where she found pictures of her mother. Her mother and a man that must have been her father (though his hair was brown and not gray and his face was clean-shaven whereas the father she knew had a mustache). They looked incredibly happy. She saw pictures of their wedding, pictures of their holiday to Mars, pictures of... her mother in a Starfleet uniform.
To Susan, her mother had been a holoprogram designer. Her father had told her that. But the pictures continued. Many of them of both her parents in uniform. Swallowing hard, Susan had continued until a baby appeared in the pictures. She smiled as she paged through the unfamiliar scenes... until the baby grew past five. The last picture featuring the child was of a nine-year old little boy with blonde hair and excited green eyes, smiling brightly. It was then that Susan, stroking her own light brown hair subconsciously, realized that she had had a sibling of some sort.
She had thought of confronting her father, but she was afraid to bring back some horrible memory. As it was his face grew clouded whenever she mentioned her mother. She loved her dad so much and, in truth, was so scared of losing him, that she never breathed a word about her discovery. But she joined Starfleet.
She wasn't sure if her mother was out there somewhere, but she assumed that her brother was dead. Maybe that was why her mother had left? With all these questions running madly through her head, Susan entered Starfleet Academy at the young age of 17. Her father strongly objected, telling her that she was too young to face a decision like that. Susan, however, showing her stubborn streak, refused to budge.
Susan found academy life thrilling. In her first year she shared a room with a studious Vulcan girl called T'Marni. T'Marni proved to be an excellent influence on Susan and she had a successful Academy career.
After the initial four year course she spent another year in the field focusing on counseling of other species and psychology. She was then assigned to the USS ANUBIS.
