During the years preceding the calamity that befell their world, Sonah taught his daughter the skill unique to their people, that of cellular transformation. This skill allowed the members of this now extinct race to take on the form of other biological creatures such as animals and even other people. Forced to act quickly due to the impending doom that he knew was coming, Sonah was only able to cover the basics of this unique skill, limiting Maya to only the forms of animals she had thoroughly studied. Without a world, or even a people, to call her own, Maya decided to join Starfleet with the hopes of maybe one day discovering other members of her race that had been fortunate enough to find a way to escape their doomed world.
The cellular transformation is a rapid skill that unfortunately possesses some drastic drawbacks. The most important of these is that the newly acquired form can only be kept for a maximum of 15 minutes. Failure to return to her natural form within that time would result in Maya's death. Another drawback is that Maya gains all of the creature's weaknesses and limitations when taking on their form. Also, due to the physical and mental demands of such transformation, Maya finds herself extremely weak and disoriented for several minutes following her return to her natural form.
Because of the limited time her father had to teach her this skill, the number of forms available to her is somewhat restricted. She is able to take on the form of the following creatures:
* Shillian Night Flyer, a creature resembling a grey coloured giant bat with a wingspan of almost a meter. Like normal bats, the Shillian Night Flyer, also called a "Djaro" navigates using natural sonar.

During her two years on EARTH and the following four years at Starfleet Academy, Maya took the time to study in depth local fauna in order to maybe add them to her short list of transformation possibilities. Because of the amount of time required for her to master a new form, Maya was only able to master the forms of two EARTH creatures.
* An eagle, a majestic creature able to soar amongst the clouds and possessing an acute visual perception.
