A security clearance is an authorization that allows access to information that would otherwise be forbidden. Security clearances are used in industry and government. Many jobs in information technology require security clearances. When a security clearance is required for access to specific information, the information is said to be classified. Security clearances can be issued for individuals or for groups.

Within the United Federation of Planets, there are multiple levels of security clearance. The terms used for the classifications, and the requirements imposed on applicants are listed below. In the UFP, the two most common security clearances are known as Beta and Gamma. In order to obtain a security clearance, a person must meet certain requirements concerning character, criminal record, fleet position and Command Level. The higher the level of the security clearance, the more strict the requirements are.

Independent Entry Level Clearances (from lowest to highest):

ALPHA - Civilian w/ Special Clearance
BETA - Federation Crewman
GAMMA - Federation Officer
DELTA - Crewman aboard an SFI vessel

Lowest Level Clearances (from lowest to highest):

EPSILON - Low Level Science/Engineering - SFSci/SFEng Officers & Science/Engineering Officers of the Field
ETA - Low Level Security - SFSec Officers & Security Officers of the Field

RHO - Highest Level Operations - SFOps Admiralty & Chief Operations Officers of the Field

High Level Clearances (from lowest to highest):

UPSILON - Command - Executive Officers

Highest Level Clearances (from lowest to highest):

CHI - Captains Eyes Only
PSI - High Command - Admiralty
TAU - Mid-Level Intel - Level 3-4 Agents & Level 3 Field Agents, Command Level Officers on an SFI vessel
PHI - High-Level Intel, Level 5 Agents & Level 4 Field Agents
OMEGA - Highest Level Intel Operatives - SFI Admiralty & Level 5 Field Agents

How to read the graph:

A clearance on one side of the Graph has access only to item to the left side of the Graph - thus Medical has access to science, but not to Security. An Officer has complete access to his own Security Clearance Level as well as any existing in tiers *above* his but not below, parallel or to the right. Thus a THETA clearance gives access to THETA level information as well as ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA, DELTA (As these 4 are automatically granted to any Officer of the Fleet) and EPSILON but *NOT* ETA, ZETA, MU, LAMBDA, NU, IOTA or any level listed below it. INFINITY clearance exisits on its own level without access to any other Officer Clearances and not accessable by any other level of Clearance.
