MADAGASCAR
(Repoblikan'l Madagasikara
(The former: Malagasy)

Madagascar -
was visited by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The French established trading posts in the late 18th century and was claimed as a protectorate by the French in 1895. It became an autonomous overseas French territory (Malagasy Republic) in 1958, independent in 1960 and was renamed Malagasy Democratic Republic in 1977. The country name reverted to Repoblikan'l Madagasikara in 1993. Postage stamps have been issued from 1889
