Cyrus has a recorded history of more than 4,000 years. Rulers have included Greeks, Ptolemies, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Franks, Venetians, Turks (1571-1878), and British. The British Crown Colony was established in 1925. Independence was granted in 1960. The Turks invaded in 1974 and occupied more than a third of the island. The turkish community declared itself independent as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 1984.
